The Sagawa Museum of Art is a destination of profound beauty located in a scenic area overlooking Lake Biwa in Moriyama City, Shiga Prefecture. Opened in March 1998, the museum provides a space where nature, architecture, and art become one. The complex features three main buildings arranged as if floating on a central water garden, a design that harmonizes perfectly with the surrounding natural environment. The museum was established as part of the 40th-anniversary project of its founding entity, Sagawa Express Co., Ltd. It operates as an open institution dedicated to the promotion and development of art and culture for both the local community and the world. The collection includes significant works by masters such as Ikuo Hayama (Japanese painting), Churyo Sato (sculpture), and Jonyu Raku (ceramics). Beyond its art, the architecture itself is highly acclaimed, having received numerous honors including the Good Design Award and the Architectural Institute of Japan Award, marking its importance in the history of modern Japanese architecture.
The most striking feature is the architectural elegance of the buildings floating on the water garden. This space offers a different expression through every season. The exhibition focuses on Japanese paintings, sculptures, and ceramics, allowing visitors to touch upon both traditional Japanese aesthetics and contemporary sensibilities. The architecture also blends modern technology—such as the distinctive titanium roofs—with traditional elements like the tea house. Even outside the exhibition rooms, the time spent observing the water-side scenery offers a meditative experience away from daily life.
The museum's appearance transforms with the seasons. From spring to summer, the vibrant greenery and the shimmering water garden are particularly striking, while autumn brings a rich palette of colors to the landscape. The museum is open from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM (last entry at 4:30 PM). Visiting during the late afternoon is highly recommended, as the changing light enhances the textures of the artworks and the architectural forms.
In addition to viewing the permanent collections, the museum occasionally hosts cultural events such as tea ceremonies and workshops for children. The museum is designed to be a place of quiet contemplation.
