The Sagano Bamboo Forest is one of Kyoto's most iconic scenic spots, located in Ukyo-ku, Kyoto City. The path stretches approximately 400 meters from the vicinity of Nonomiya Shrine toward the North Gate of Tenryu-ji Temple and the Okochi Sanso Villa. On clear days, sunlight filters through the dense canopy to create beautiful patterns on the ground, while on cloudy days, the forest takes on a mysterious, dim, and tranquil atmosphere. It is a place where visitors can feel the deep, traditional aesthetic of Kyoto through its well-preserved natural landscape.
This area has been celebrated for its scenic beauty since ancient times. Following the move of the capital to Kyoto, it became a beloved destination for emperors and aristocrats for leisure and hunting. The region has deep ties to the imperial court; for instance, Emperor Saga once resided in a villa here, and the nearby Daikaku-ji Temple was later developed. The area is also culturally rich, known as the site where the poet Fujiwara no Teika constructed the Ogura Mountain Villa. During the Edo period, the development of the Hozugawa River transport system further shaped the landscape, blending natural beauty with historical progress.
The primary attraction is undoubtedly the endless view of soaring bamboo stalks. The sight of the bamboo filling the sky on both sides of the path is truly overwhelming. To deepen your experience, we recommend visiting nearby shrines and temples, such as Nonomiya Shrine. The way the light changes depending on the time of day and season adds a dynamic and ever-changing quality to the scenery, making every visit unique.
While the bamboo forest is beautiful year-round, the experience changes with the light. During sunny daytime hours, you can enjoy the beautiful effect of "komorebi" (sunlight filtering through leaves). Conversely, early mornings or cloudy days offer a more mystical and quiet atmosphere. To enjoy a peaceful stroll and capture perfect photos without crowds, visiting in the early morning is highly recommended.
The main activity here is a peaceful walk through the rhythmic, orderly bamboo groves. You can easily integrate this stroll into a broader cultural journey by visiting nearby historical sites like Tenryu-ji Temple or Nonomiya Shrine. For a wider exploration of the area, you can also utilize the Sagano Scenic Railway (Torokko Train) to enjoy the surrounding landscape.
The Sagano Bamboo Forest is closely connected to the major landmarks of Arashiyama. Key nearby sites include the World Heritage site Tenryu-ji Temple, the matchmaking shrine Nonomiya Shrine, and the Okochi Sanso Villa. You can also easily walk to the iconic Togetsukyo Bridge and the Katsura River, allowing you to experience the nature and history of Sagano from multiple perspectives.
