Sagae Park is a vast, scenic park located in Nagaoka, Sagae City, Yamagata Prefecture. The park's most significant attraction is its "Azalea Garden," which is one of the largest in the Tohoku region. The garden features approximately 43,000 plants across 11 different varieties of azalea, creating a vibrant tapestry of color. Additionally, the "Sakura no Oka" (Cherry Blossom Hill) near the local museum area is home to about 700 cherry trees. This area offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the Yamagata Basin and the majestic mountain ranges, including Mt. Zao, Mt. Gassan, and the Asahi Mountains. It is an expansive, open space where visitors can feel truly at one with nature.
Sagae Park has been developed as a vital community space that celebrates the natural beauty of the region. The culture of appreciating seasonal flowers, particularly azaleas and cherry blossoms, is deeply rooted here. The changing scenery throughout the seasons has become an iconic landscape for the local community. Thanks to its elevated position overlooking the Yamagata Basin, the park serves as a cherished space for admiring the natural splendor of the region.

There are several key highlights that captivate visitors. First is the Azalea Garden, where approximately 43,000 bushes of 11 different varieties create a stunning, colorful landscape. Second is Sakura no Oka (Cherry Blossom Hill). Here, you can enjoy the sight of roughly 700 cherry trees set against the backdrop of the grand Mt. Gassan and Asahi mountain ranges. The unobstructed view of the Yamata Basin is a unique characteristic that makes this park truly special.
The park's appearance changes dramatically with the seasons. We highly recommend visiting in spring (around April and May) to experience the cherry blossoms at Sakura no Oka and the vibrant colors of the azalea garden. The blooming of the azaleas is a major highlight of this season. Please note that certain facilities, such as the athletics stadium, are available for use from April 1st to November 30th, allowing for various seasonal activities.

Sagae Park is an ideal environment for both relaxation and physical activity. The park includes an athletics stadium (300-meter track, 6 lanes) where visitors can engage in sports or training. You can also enjoy a leisurely stroll through the vast grounds, losing track of time while gazing at seasonal flowers and distant mountains. Depending on the season, the park may also host special events such as the Azalea Festival.
The natural beauty of the area extends well beyond the park boundaries. The park offers excellent access to mountainous regions like Zao, Gassan, and the Asahi mountain range, making it an excellent addition to a broader Yamagata sightseeing itinerary. The scenic views of the Yamata Basin can be enjoyed from various points in the surrounding area as well.

When exploring the park, please choose clothing suitable for the season. Since you will be walking through large areas like the Azalea Garden and Sakura no Oka, comfortable walking shoes and seasonal attire are highly recommended. If you wish to use specific facilities like the athletics stadium, you must submit a formal application to the Municipal Gymnasium in advance. Please respect the park rules and help preserve the natural environment during your visit.
