Ryuzu Falls is a celebrated scenic spot located in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. The waterfall features a mountain stream that flows energetically over a series of stepped rock formations for approximately 210 meters. The name "Ryuzu" (meaning Dragon Head) is derived from the way a large rock splits the water at the base, creating a shape that resembles a dragon's head. The way the currents split to the left and right resembles dragon whiskers, creating a truly unique and striking landscape.
The site has been cherished for its distinct geological features since ancient times. The presence of the large rock that divides the plunge pool is the source of its name. As a vital part of the natural landscape of the Nikko area, the falls are known for showing a different, beautiful face with every changing season.

The greatest attraction is the dynamic movement of the water as it cascades down the tiered rock steps. The unique shape of the water splitting around the rock at the base is a sight found only here. Additionally, a dedicated observation deck allows visitors to view the entire scene, including the base of the falls. Depending on the season, the surrounding vegetation creates a vibrant and colorful tapestry of scenery.
The landscape changes dramatically with the seasons. From May to June, you can enjoy the colorful blooms of the reddish-purple Togo-ku Mitsubatsutsuji (Rhododendron), adding a splash of color to the greenery. From late September, the autumn foliage begins. Ryuzu Falls is known for having some of the earliest autumn colors in the Nikko area, featuring brilliant hues from maple trees and Japanese lime trees. The view from the observation deck during the peak foliage season is one of the absolute highlights of the region.

The primary experience is enjoying the view from the observation deck, where you can feel the sheer power of the waterfall up close. It is a perfect place to observe the flow of water and the intricate shapes of nature while feeling the passage of the seasons. Visitors can immerse themselves in the natural beauty that defines the Nikko scenic area.
The area around Ryuzu Falls is dotted with various spots where you can fully enjoy the natural beauty of Nikko. The area is easily accessible by car or bus, making it a perfect addition to any sightseeing route through the Nikko natural landscape.
