Ryuso Falls is a magnificent waterfall with a drop of approximately 60 meters, located in Ikeda Town, Imadate District, Fukui Prefecture. It was officially designated as one of the '100 Best Waterfalls in Japan' in 1989. Situated at the confluence of the Buko and Hieda Rivers, the waterfall features a unique branching structure where water flows gracefully over the rock face. The surrounding area is a lush natural landscape that offers a different, breathtaking view with every season.
The name of the falls is steeped in legend. It is said that an ascetic monk named 'Ryuso' once lived here, carving Buddhist statues to focus his spiritual practice. Another legend tells of a dragon that inhabited the deep pool at the base of the falls, occasionally racing up the cascading water to ascend to the heavens. These mystical stories add a layer of profound cultural depth to the site's natural beauty.
The most striking feature is the 60-meter vertical drop and the powerful movement of the water. From the viewpoint just below the stairs, you can look up and witness the full, awe-inspiring scale of the falls. Additionally, the area downstream features a cluster of potholes (natural rock basins) carved by the water and rocks over centuries, providing a fascinating geological sight.
The scenery shifts beautifully throughout the year. From summer to early autumn, the vibrant green of the surrounding forest creates a refreshing contrast with the white water of the falls. During the autumn foliage season, the landscape transforms into a brilliant palette of yellow, orange, and red. Please note that during the winter season (roughly late November to early April), access to the area may be restricted due to weather or road conditions. It is highly recommended to check local status before visiting.
The area around the falls is an ideal place for quiet nature observation. As you walk from the parking area toward the falls, you can enjoy the changing topography and local flora. It is a perfect spot for those looking to immerse themselves in the peaceful atmosphere of the Japanese wilderness.
