Ryumonji-zaka is located in Aira City, Kagoshima Prefecture, and is part of the "Satsuma Kaido (Oguchi-suji)," one of the primary highways of the Satsuma Domain during the Edo period. Due to its immense historical value, the site was designated as a National Historic Site in 2006. The stone-paved paths and gentle slopes, preserved in harmony with the surrounding natural environment, serve as a tangible remnant of the original highway structure.
The Satsuma Kaido consisted of several routes depending on the region. The path containing Ryumonji-zaka is part of the "Oguchi-suji" route, which traveled north from Kagoshima toward Oguchi. During the Edo period, this highway played a vital role in the logistics and movement of people within the Satsuma Domain. This slope, located near Kajiki, was a geographically significant point for transport. Today, it is carefully preserved as a precious cultural heritage site that conveys the atmosphere of the past.
The primary attraction is the stone-paved slope that retains the original structure of the ancient highway. As an outdoor historic site, the scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. We recommend visiting during periods when the surrounding trees are lush and green or when the seasonal transitions are most apparent. However, please be aware that during or after rainfall, the stone paving can become very slippery due to moss and moisture, so please exercise caution. Visiting during bright daylight hours allows you to clearly appreciate the texture of the stones and the fine details of the surrounding nature.

The stone-paved slope has a noticeable incline and can become slippery depending on the weather. We strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, such as sneakers. Please be especially careful of your footing during or after rain.

Because the path is a stone-paved slope utilizing natural terrain, there are steps and inclines. The site is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers; please plan accordingly.
To protect the historic site, please refrain from picking plants or any actions that could damage the stone paving. Additionally, because the ground becomes very slippery when wet, please be extremely careful with your footing on rainy days.
