Ryukuchi-ji is a significant Buddhist temple of the Nichiren sect located in Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture. It is renowned as the site of the 'Ryukuchi Persecution,' one of the four great persecutions in the life of Nichiren, the founder of the Nichiren sect. This location holds immense spiritual and historical importance within the Nichiren Buddhist tradition.
Nichiren, the founder of the Nichiren sect, faced severe persecution from the government due to his direct warnings to the ruling authorities. In September 1271 (Bun'ei 8), Nichiren was taken to the Ryukuchi execution grounds. According to legend, just as the execution was about to be carried out, a brilliant, blinding light appeared from the direction of Enoshima, dazzling the executioners and causing the execution to be halted. This miraculous event is known as the 'Ryukuchi Persecution.'
Following this, in 1337, a disciple named Nippo established the 'Shikihido' (Skin Hall) to house the 'Kubi-shiki' (the skin/cloth used during the execution attempt) and a statue of the founder. This marked the beginning of Ryukuchi-ji. In 1601, the temple's structure was further formalized through the donation of land by Saime Shimamura, a devout follower of the Nichiren sect.
While the temple's scale was reduced during the Meiji era due to changes in government religious policies, restoration efforts have since revitalized the site. Today, it maintains its profound historical and religious value as one of the five important branches of the Ikegami sect.
