Ryugen-ji is a historic temple located in Oita Prefecture. Its most striking feature is the wooden three-story pagoda, a rare architectural treasure in the Kyushu region, dating back to the Edo period. This structure is also known as the "Taishi Pagoda," as it is dedicated to Prince Shotoku. The pagoda is a highly valued architectural specimen and is officially designated as a prefectural cultural property. A unique detail to look for is the series of small, expressive demon (oni) statues positioned at the junctions beneath the eaves, adding a touch of whimsical character to the solemn structure.
The history of this temple dates back to 1600 (the 5th year of the Keicho era). It is said that the temple was founded in the present-day Ryugafuchi area after Inaba Ukon Sadanori, a local lord of that era, visited the area by boat and was deeply moved by the virtues of the monk Enyo. As a sub-temple of Chion-in, the head temple of the Jodo sect, the temple has been deeply intertwined with local faith for centuries.
