Ryuzuga-taki Falls is a dynamic waterfall located in Unnan City, Shimane Prefecture, consisting of a 40m high Ootaki (Great Falls) and a 30m high Mamedaki (Small Falls). Situated within the Ryuzuga Yaetaki Prefectural Natural Park, its powerful flow earned its name, which evokes the image of a dragon winding its way upward toward the heavens. As one of the 'Japan Top 100 Waterfalls,' it is celebrated as one of the most magnificent falls in the Chugoku region. The striking contrast between the intense spray of the Ootaki and the tiered flow of the Mamedaki is truly overwhelming.
This area has long been known as a place where one can feel the raw energy of nature. It is said that the poet Omachi Keigetsu praised its beauty during the Meiji era, stating that among all the waterfalls in Izumo Province, Ryuzuga-taki was the finest. Furthermore, a cave housing a 'Waterfall Kannon' (a Buddhist deity) is located nearby, highlighting the site's historical role in nature worship. Every August, the 'Ryuzuga-taki Festival' is held, where traditional waterfall dances are performed, preserving the local culture that remains deeply rooted in the community.
The greatest highlight is the 'Urami-no-taki' (Hidden View Waterfall), where you can view the falls from inside a cave. The lower part of the Ootaki forms a cavern, offering a mystical view of the water cascading down from above—a true masterpiece of natural architecture. Additionally, the ability to observe two different types of water movement—the intense vertical drop of the Ootaki and the tiered flow of the Mamedaki—is a unique charm of this location. Within the well-maintained natural park, you can experience the sound and spray of the water with your entire body.
While Ryuzuga-taki offers different expressions throughout the year, it is particularly impressive during seasons when water volume increases. As it is a natural park, there are no specific closing times, but visiting during bright daylight hours allows for a clearer view of the intricate water movements inside the cave. Visiting during the 'Ryuzuga-taki Festival' in August provides a special opportunity to enjoy the waterfall's power alongside traditional cultural performances.
The experience centers on feeling the beauty of nature through all five senses. Entering the cave to hear the roaring sound of the water while feeling the spray from above is a unique sensation found in few other places. You can also enjoy walking along the surrounding trails to observe the rich ecosystem and the complex landscape shaped by the terrain. It is a place where silence and dynamic energy coexist.
Ryuzuga-taki is located near the border of Unnan and Izumo cities, surrounded by lush natural environments. The nearby 'Yaetaki' falls can also be visited to deepen your understanding of the local waterfall culture. The area also features spots related to the legends of Yamata-no-Orochi, allowing for a route that combines nature with ancient mythology.
The area around the waterfall is a natural park with some maintained paths, but there are unpaved sections and steep slopes. Please wear comfortable, non-slip shoes. It is also recommended to carry a bear bell for safety. To protect the environment, please take all trash home with you, do not pick plants, and do not enter restricted areas. Be extremely careful as the ground near the cave and the waterfall is wet and slippery.
