Rokusho Jinja is a historic shrine located in Myodaiji-cho, Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture. It is said to have been founded by Matsudaira Kiyoyasu, the grandfather of Tokugawa Ieyasu, making it deeply connected to the origins of the Tokugawa (Matsudaira) clan. One of its most striking features is the unique juxtaposition of historical architecture and modern urban life. The sight of a train passing directly behind the bright vermilion torii gate is an iconic view, symbolizing the coexistence of Japan's daily life and ancient traditions.
The shrine was established by inviting the deities from Rokusho Jinja in Matsudaira (near present-day Matsudaira-cho, Toyota City). As it was founded by Matsudaira Kiyoyasu, the grandfather of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the shrine has enjoyed profound protection from the Tokugawa Shogunate, serving as the local guardian deity for the Tokugawa family. Historically, it is said that only high-ranking daimyo with a fief of 50,000 koku or more were permitted to ascend the stone steps before the Romon (gate), highlighting its deep connection to the Tokugawa lineage. Today, it remains a vital center of faith and local culture.
The shrine grounds house several precious structures designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. A must-see includes the Honden (Main Hall), Heiden (Offering Hall), and Haiden (Worship Hall), which were reportedly renovated during the Kan'ei era (1634–1636) by order of Tokugawa Iemitsu. The Romon (Gate), built in 1688, is another architectural masterpiece. Additionally, the shrine preserves the 'Rokusho Jinja Ema Group,' a collection of 83 votive tablets designated as a tangible folk cultural property of Okazaki City, offering immense historical value.
While the shrine offers a peaceful atmosphere year-round, October is a particularly vibrant time due to the 'Reisai' (Annual Autumn Festival). During this period, visitors can experience traditional Japanese festivities, including children's portable shrine (mikoshi) processions, the dedication of the Toyoei dance, and musical performances.
