Rokudo-no-Tsutumi is a scenic water channel and cherry blossom destination located in Ina City, Nagano Prefecture. Along this historic agricultural waterway, which was developed during the late Edo period, approximately 120 cherry trees (primarily the Takato Kohigan variety) stand in a beautiful row. The most iconic sight is the "Sakura Reflection" (Sakasa-zakura), where the vibrant pink blossoms are perfectly mirrored on the calm surface of the water. Set against the backdrop of the white, snow-capped Central and Southern Alps, this scenery is a quintessential symbol of Japanese spring.
The history of this embankment dates back to 1848 during the late Edo period. Naonari Naito, the lord of the Takato Domain at the time, ordered the construction of this waterway as part of a new land reclamation project to stabilize the domain's finances. The construction of this 10km waterway involved many local residents. Legend has it that during the construction, workers would call out "Aa-san-yo (referring to Sanemon) do-tsuke-yo" while performing the ground compaction work. Following its completion, the nearby Suehiro Village was established, and the waterway continues to serve as vital infrastructure for the region today.
The primary draw is the row of Takato Kohigan cherry blossoms that line the water. This specific variety is known for its deeper, more vivid pink color compared to the common Yoshino cherry, adding a striking splash of color to the landscape. On calm days, the "Sakura Reflection" creates a breathtaking, photogenic moment where the trees appear to float on the water. The contrast between the bright pink blossoms and the white snow of the Alps provides a unique experience found only in this region.
The peak season is typically from early April to mid-April when the Takato Kohigan blossoms are in full bloom. For the best photography, visit during the morning when the light reflects beautifully off the water, or in the afternoon when the soft sunlight illuminates the blossoms. Since blooming times vary depending on weather and temperature, it is highly recommended to check the latest blooming status before your visit.
Visitors can enjoy a relaxing stroll along the embankment, feeling the harmony between nature and history. Many travelers come with cameras to capture the reflection of the cherry blossoms and the surrounding Alps. The area is surrounded by peaceful rural landscapes, making it an ideal spot for relaxation and reconnecting with the traditional Japanese countryside.
The famous Takato Castle Park, one of Japan's premier cherry blossom viewing spots, is located only about a 10-minute drive from Rokudo-no-Tsutumi. Visiting both locations allows you to fully immerse yourself in the spring beauty of the Ina region. The surrounding area is also a great base for driving tours and hiking through nature-rich landscapes.
Please wear comfortable walking shoes for your stroll. As temperatures can fluctuate in early spring, bringing a light jacket is recommended. While there is no entrance fee for the walking area, please carry cash if you plan to use nearby parking lots. When taking photos, please be mindful of other visitors and avoid obstructing local agricultural activities. As this is an active agricultural waterway, please do not step into the water or onto private farmland.
