Located on Mt. Rokko in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, the Rokko Alpine Botanical Garden takes advantage of the mountain's unique climate—similar to southern Hokkaido—to cultivate a diverse collection of alpine and cold-climate plants. Visitors can enjoy the shifting beauty of the four seasons on Mt. Rokko. The garden maintains a special sisterhood with the Faulhorn Alpine Botanical Garden in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland. This international connection is even reflected in the garden's design, with trail markers styled after Swiss hiking paths, creating an atmosphere that feels both exotic and serene.
The garden holds a distinguished history with deep ties to the Japanese Imperial Family. In 1958, during his time as Crown Prince, the then-Emperor visited the garden, and the suspension bridge built during that era was named the "Prince's Bridge." Furthermore, in 1981, Emperor Showa visited the garden and expressed a profound interest in the local Enkianthus perulatus (Enkosou) colonies. Following his visit, 30 specimens of these plants were gifted and transplanted to the Imperial Palace's Kokyo Fukiage Garden. Today, the garden features monuments and commemorative trees planted during visits by three generations of the Imperial Family, preserving this rich cultural legacy.
The garden showcases a wide variety of alpine plants and cold-climate species from around the world. Thanks to the partnership with Switzerland, many elements of the landscape evoke the feeling of the Swiss Alps. From the seasonal plant displays to the intentional landscape design, visitors can enjoy a scenery that feels worlds away from daily life.
The garden is open from mid-March until November 29th. Spring (around March to May) is a beautiful time to see alpine plants budding and blooming, while summer offers lush greenery, and autumn brings the colorful transitions of the season. The standard operating hours are 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with the last admission at 4:30 PM. Please note that hours may be extended during special event periods.
Beyond plant observation, visitors can enjoy walking through paths designed to mimic Swiss hiking trails. The garden often hosts seasonal events, which may include the display of Swiss cantonal flags or special seasonal decorations, adding to the international charm of the site.
The Mt. Rokko area features several attractions, such as the ROKKO Mori no Ne Museum. Visitors can often purchase combo tickets to enjoy both the botanical garden and the museum more efficiently. Access to the area is easily managed via the Rokko Cable Car or the Rokko Arima Ropeway, making it a perfect part of a day trip.
As the garden is a natural environment, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. While credit cards and transportation IC cards (like Suica/Pasmo) can be used for ticket purchases, please verify specific payment methods at the entrance.
