The Rokko Cable Car is a scenic cable car line operated by Kobe Rokko Railway in Nada Ward, Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture. The line spans 1.7 km, ascending rapidly from an elevation of 244.2m at the Lower Station to 737.5m at the Rokko Sanjo (Summit) Station. Its most striking feature is the incredibly steep gradient of approximately 498‰ (about 26 degrees), offering a thrilling ride. The summit station serves as the primary gateway to the lush natural environments of Mt. Rokko.
The history of this route is deeply rooted in the region, originally part of a transportation plan by the Rokko Oroshi Railway to facilitate travel toward Arima Onsen. Early concepts even considered a system of pulling carriages via platforms. Following various transitions, including acquisitions by Hanshin Electric Railway and surviving the Great Hanshin Flood of 1938, the line evolved into its current form. The station building at Rokko Sanjo Station is a notable architectural landmark, featuring an Art Deco design that preserves the aesthetic of its founding era. As of April 2024, the line has transitioned to a management structure where Hanshin Electric Railway holds the facility assets while Kobe Rokko Railway manages operations.
The highlight of the journey is the dynamic experience of ascending nearly 500 meters in a short period. Watching the two-car single-track train climb the steep incline is a unique spectacle found only in this region. Upon reaching the summit, visitors can enjoy the views from the historic station building and the surrounding mountain scenery. The area around the summit station also serves as a cultural hub, hosting various seasonal events and concerts amidst the natural landscape.
Mt. Rokko offers distinct charms throughout the year. The period from March to May is perfect for viewing fresh spring greenery, while October and November are ideal for autumn foliage. Traveling during these seasons offers particularly clear views of the mountain paths. While the cable car typically runs at 20-minute intervals, service is often increased to every 15 minutes during peak tourist seasons to accommodate travelers.
Once you arrive at Rokko Sanjo Station, the mountain exploration truly begins. You can transfer to the Rokko Sanjo Bus or the Rokko Maya Sky Shuttle to reach higher elevations or nearby sightseeing spots. There are also established routes via bus that lead toward the famous Arima Onsen hot spring area. Whether you are hiking through nature or attending a mountain event, the transit itself is a key part of the adventure.
From the summit station, buses can take you deeper into the mountain areas or toward the Rokko Arima Ropeway (Omote Rokko Line). From the Lower Station, you can access the city via Kobe Municipal Buses (Routes 16 or 26) toward the JR Rokkomichi or Hanshin Mikage areas. The cable car acts as a vital link between the urban areas of Kobe and the scenic mountain highlands.
Because you are traveling into a mountainous area, we recommend bringing a light jacket or extra layers to handle sudden weather changes. Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended for navigating the station and bus transfers.
