Rokkaken is a precious cultural asset located in Kuwana City, Mie Prefecture, representing the elegance of the Meiji and Taisho eras. Completed in 1913 as the residence of Seiroki Moro, its most striking feature is the coexistence of a Western-style mansion and a traditional Japanese stroll garden. The Western-style mansion was designed by the renowned British architect Josiah Conder, famous for designing the Rokumeikan. The mansion is designated as a National Important Cultural Property, while the surrounding garden is a designated National Scenic Spot. The estate was completed in 1913 for the second generation of the Moro family. The design was led by the British architect Josiah Conder, a figure of great significance in Japanese architectural history. The complex includes a two-story wooden Western-style mansion with a four-story tower topped with natural slate, alongside Japanese-style buildings and storehouses. In 1997, the Western and Japanese buildings were designated as National Important Cultural Properties, and in 2001, the garden was designated as a National Scenic Spot. It remains a vital monument to the architectural and cultural fusion of the Meiji and Taisho periods.
