Robai no Sato is a specialized nature park located in Matsuidacho, Annaka City, Gunma Prefecture, dedicated to the beauty of Robai (winter jasmine). The park spans a vast 3.2 hectares and is home to 1,200 plants totaling approximately 12,000 Robai blossoms. These yellow flowers bloom even amidst the winter chill, offering a unique sensory experience. The grounds feature well-maintained walking paths, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the natural scents and breathtaking scenery.
The local culture is deeply rooted in celebrating the changing seasons through nature. The Robai plant is celebrated as a herald of the transition from winter to spring. This park has been developed as a space where people can observe this natural cycle, balancing environmental conservation with seasonal tourism. It serves as a cultural landmark for witnessing the subtle shifts in the natural world.
Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll along the established walking paths to observe the flora up close. The most iconic sight is the striking contrast of the bright yellow Robia flowers blooming amidst a white, snowy landscape. To ensure a comfortable visit, the park is equipped with essential facilities such as restrooms and small shops. Depending on the season, you may also find local specialty markets where you can purchase regional produce and plants.
The park is typically open from late December to mid-February. The peak visual experience occurs during the cold months of January and February, when the contrast between the yellow flowers and the snow is most dramatic. The park is generally open from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM (or 5:00 PM). We highly recommend visiting during daylight hours to fully appreciate the vibrant colors and delicate fragrances. Please note that the closing date may vary each year, so checking the schedule in advance is advised.
The primary way to enjoy the park is through leisurely walks along the scenic paths. As you wander through the 12,000 blossoms, you can experience the profound sense of peace that the vast landscape provides. Additionally, the park occasionally hosts local markets where visitors can purchase seasonal items such as cut flowers, seedlings, and fresh local vegetables, offering a true taste of the Gunma region.
Annaka City offers various other spots to experience Japanese history and nature. The area is dotted with historical routes related to the Nakasendo highway, as well as other botanical gardens and parks. There are also local accommodations and charming historic streets nearby, making it easy to plan a comprehensive sightseeing itinerary involving both nature and history.
Since the park is open during the winter and early spring, heavy winter clothing is essential. We strongly recommend wearing a thick coat, thermal layers, and non-slip shoes to navigate the snowy or icy paths safely. As the park is a natural environment, please be mindful of your footing. For purchases at the shop, please carry cash as many local services may not accept cards. While photography is permitted, please respect the natural environment and follow all posted rules and etiquette.
