Located in Aoi-ku, Shizuoka City, Rinzai-ji is a historic training temple known as the ancestral temple of the Sengoku-era-daimyo, the Imagawa clan. The most striking feature of this temple is its nature as a secluded place of spiritual practice, which is usually closed to the public. The deep, tranquil spaces within the grounds are opened to the general public only twice a year on specific dates. This is a rare chance to witness the National Important Cultural Property main hall and a garden designated as a National Scenic Spot, both of which represent the architectural and aesthetic heights of the Azuchi-Momoyama period.
Rinzai-ji was founded by Imagawa Nobuchika. Despite enduring the turbulent wars involving figures like Takeda Shingen and the eventual rise of the Tokugawa Shogunate, the temple has preserved its historical integrity. It is particularly famous as the place where Tokugawa Ieyasu spent time as a hostage, receiving the teachings of the eminent monk Taigen Xue-sai while diligently pursuing his studies. As a site connected to many pivotal figures in Japanese history, it is an essential landmark for understanding the history of Shizuoka. It also served a significant role as the family temple for the Imagawa clan.
The greatest draw is the opportunity to see the architecture and gardens that are usually inaccessible. The main hall is a National Important Cultural Property, showcasing the architectural styles of the early Edo period. Additionally, the garden, designed during the Azuchi-Momoyama period, is a designated National Scenic Spot. The sight of these historic structures and the meticulously designed landscape is a precious experience available only during the special opening periods. Visitors may also find historical artifacts related to the Imagawa clan and Tokugawa Ieyasu within the temple grounds.
Rinzai-ji is not open to the public year-round. It is open only twice a year: May 19 (the anniversary of the death of Imagawa Yoshimoto) and October 15 (the day of the Marishiten prayer festival). Planning your visit around these specific dates is essential to experience the full depth of the temple. The typical visiting hours during these special openings are from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
