The Renjuku and the Former Residence of Sugano Sanzan is a significant historical site dedicated to the life and work of Sugano Sanzan, a prominent Confucian scholar of the late Edo period. Designated as a National Special Historic Site, the area preserves the functional essence of an Edo-period educational institution. The site includes original structures such as lecture halls, dormitories, the scholar's residence, rice granaries, and a network of waterways, all set within a beautifully preserved natural environment that reflects the way of life and learning during that era.
During the late Edo period, after studying in Kyoto, Sugano Sanzan returned to his hometown in what is now Shinbe, Fukuyama City, to establish his private academy, known as "Renjuku." This academy served as a vital educational hub for the Fukuyama domain, attracting students from across the country. The site features architectural traces of various expansions and renovations, telling the story of the site's evolution over time. Visitors can also see the shrine where the ancestral tablets of the Sugano family are kept, illustrating the deep connection between personal life and the pursuit of knowledge.
