Rakujuen is a vast municipal park located in Mishima City, Shizuoka Prefecture. It is a multi-functional destination where history, nature, and leisure seamlessly blend. Originally serving as a private villa for high-ranking nobility, the park now features beautiful Japanese gardens, a zoo, and a playground area, making it a perfect destination for visitors of all ages. Surrounded by lush greenery, it offers a serene escape from the bustle of daily life, allowing visitors to truly relax.
The history of this site is deeply profound. Formerly known as Kobamayama, the estate was constructed in 1890 (Meiji 23) as a villa for Prince Konomiya Akihito. It also holds significant historical value as it once served as the residence for Yi Eun, the Crown Prince of Korea, known as the 'Changdeokgung' villa. In 1952, the site was handed over to Mishima City and opened to the public as a place of rest for the community. The park preserves precious architectural styles from the Meiji era, allowing visitors to experience traditional Japanese aesthetics and history firsthand.
The charms of Rakujuen are diverse. The elegant gardens and historic buildings invite visitors into a world of tranquility. At the 'Animal Plaza,' you can observe and interact with various animals up close. For those seeking nostalgia, the 'Ride Area' features charming, retro attractions such as a merry-go-round and miniature cars, providing endless fun for both children and adults. Rakujuen reveals a different face in every season. In spring, enjoy the fresh greenery and seasonal blossoms; in summer, the dense foliage provides a refreshing shade; in autumn, the vibrant foliage colors are a sight to behold; and in winter, the crisp air makes for a refreshing stroll. While daytime is best for seeing active animals and using the rides, the peaceful atmosphere at dusk is also exceptionally beautiful. Please note that the final entry is 30 minutes before closing time.
Beyond simple strolls, Rakujuen offers interactive experiences. The 'Animal Interaction Area' is highly popular among families, offering a chance to connect with nature. There are many wonderful spots to visit near Mishima. The beautiful Kitadagawa River and the historic Mishima Taisha Shrine are both easily accessible from Rakujuen, making them perfect additions to your Shizuoka itinerary. Since the park is within walking distance of Mishima Station, navigating the area is very convenient.
As the park covers a large area, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please dress appropriately for the season (heat protection in summer, warm layers in winter). When interacting with animals or using the rides, please follow all safety rules and show consideration for others. While you may bring your own drinks and snacks, please ensure you take all trash with you to keep the park clean.
