Cape Puyuni is a prominent cape located on the northern coast of the Shiretoko Peninsula in Shari Town, Hokkaido. As part of the Shiretoko World Natural Heritage site, it is celebrated as one of the 'Shiretoko Eight Views.' The name 'Puyuni' is derived from the Ainu language, meaning 'a place with a hole.' From this vantage point, visitors can look down upon the dynamic coastline of the Okhotsk Sea and the bustling Utoro Port from a high elevation, offering a sense of the immense scale of nature.
The region was designated as Shiretoko National Park in 1964, and in 2005, its exceptional biodiversity and natural beauty led to its registration as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. The name Puyuni reflects the deep-rooted Ainu culture that has long coexisted with this land. For generations, this area has been cherished as an iconic landmark that symbolizes the untouched wilderness of the Shiretoko Peninsula.
From the cape, you can enjoy an unobstructed view of the vast Okhotsk Sea horizon and the scenery of Utoro Port. In winter, many travelers visit specifically to witness the arrival of the drift ice, despite the harsh, freezing temperatures. Another highly recommended time is late afternoon; the cape is a premier spot for watching the sun set over the horizon, painting the sky in vibrant colors. Located within the Utoro area, Cape Puyuni is surrounded by various facilities that serve as bases for Shiretoko exploration. To the east, you can find the Shiretoko Pass, the Shiretoko Nature Center, and the Shiretoko Five Lakes. To the west lies Utoro Port and various hot spring (Onsen) resorts. It also provides easy access to other famous spots like Oronko Rock and Oshinkoshin Falls.
Because the cape is situated in a wild, natural environment, preparation is essential. If visiting in winter, heavy-duty thermal clothing and windproof gear are mandatory to endure the extreme cold and wind. Please note that there are no parking lots or restrooms directly at the viewpoint; please use the facilities at the nearby 'Shiretoko Nature Center.' While most scenic photography is permitted, please respect the natural environment by taking all trash with you and following local conservation rules.
