The Panorama Observatory is a scenic viewpoint located at an altitude of approximately 580 meters on Mt. Ikoma, situated on the border between eastern Osaka and Nara prefectures. Positioned midway along the Shiki-Ikoma Skyline driving route, it offers a vast, sweeping view of the Osaka Plain below. This location is highly regarded and has been officially selected as one of the "Top 100 Night Views in Japan," famous for its dense, glittering sea of urban lights. The site features a viewing plaza and an adjacent parking lot, allowing visitors to step out of their vehicles and immediately immerse themselves in the breathtaking scenery.
The Shiki-Ikoma Skyline serves as a vital mountain road connecting the Osaka and Nara regions, utilized widely as a scenic driving route that showcases the natural beauty of the area. The Panorama Observatory is one of the most significant landmarks along this route. The surrounding Mt. Ikoma area is characterized by its rich natural environment, creating a beautiful landscape where urban development meets untouched nature. This historical connection to the landscape makes it a cherished spot for both locals and travelers.
The primary attraction is the massive urban panorama visible from 580m above sea level. During the day, you can observe the immense scale of the metropolitan area, from high-rise buildings to sprawling residential districts under a clear blue sky. On exceptionally clear days, the view may even extend to the distant Akashi Kaikyo Bridge. At night, the landscape transforms into a mesmerizing sea of light, defined by the glowing streaks of major highways and streetlights. The viewing plaza includes gazebos (azumaya), providing a comfortable place to observe the topography and urban structure from a high vantage point.
The scenery changes dramatically depending on the season and time of day. Daytime offers a striking contrast between the blue sky and the urban sprawl, with distant mountain ranges visible. At dusk, you can witness a beautiful sunset as the sky transitions through various colors. At night, the focus shifts to the brilliant urban nightscape. The view is particularly clear during seasons with low humidity. Please note that because of the elevation, temperatures tend to drop significantly from autumn through winter.
This is a perfect destination to stop during a scenic drive to enjoy the view from the observatory plaza. With an adjacent parking lot, you can easily park and enjoy the surrounding nature and cityscapes. The surrounding driving route also features other notable spots, such as the "Kane-no-Naru Observatory," allowing you to explore multiple scenic viewpoints along the route.

As the observatory is at an altitude of 580m, it is cooler than the city below. We strongly recommend bringing a warm jacket, especially during the autumn and winter months or when viewing the night scenery.
Photography is permitted; however, please be mindful of other visitors and ensure you do not obstruct traffic or parking areas.
While there are parking lots and a viewing plaza, please check the local conditions regarding terrain and steps upon arrival.
The road is closed during non-operating hours, so please be mindful of the time if visiting at night. Additionally, operating hours may change due to weather conditions.
