Oyasukyo Gorge is a breathtaking V-shaped valley formed by the Minase River, located deep within Yuzawa City, Akita Prefecture. Spanning approximately 8 km, this area is a certified geosite of the Yuzawa Geopark, offering a firsthand experience of Earth's geological wonders. The ultimate highlight is the 'Dai Funto' (Great Steam Vent), where 98°C hot water and white steam erupt violently from the rock crevices. The roaring sound and rising steam create a powerful sensation of the earth's energy. The surrounding area is also famous for its hot spring resorts, making it a perfect destination to enjoy both nature and relaxation.
The unique landscape has been documented since the Edo period; the traveler Sugae Masumi recorded the sight of water erupting with sounds like thunder. The nearby Oyasukyo Onsen area has a long history of healing; local legend tells of a crane with a wounded leg that healed itself in these waters, a story that has made this area a beloved sanctuary for wellness for centuries.
The most iconic sight is undoubtedly the 'Dai Funto'. The sight of hot water and steam bursting through the rock faces is truly awe-inspiring. The canyon is also home to numerous waterfalls, such as Fudo Falls and Yakushi Falls, showcasing the beauty of natural water formations. For those who prefer not to descend the stairs, the Kawahara Yu Bridge offers a spectacular view of the dynamic canyon and steam from an elevated vantage point. Walking along the designated trails allows you to feel the breath of the earth even more closely.
Oyasukyo Gorge transforms with every season. From spring to summer, the lush greenery provides a refreshing atmosphere for walks. In autumn, the vibrant colors of the changing leaves contrast beautifully with the dark rock faces. In winter, the most dramatic spectacle occurs: the 'Shigakko' (giant ice pillars). As the heat from the steam melts the falling snow, it refreezes into massive ice structures. Around February, you may see ice pillars reaching 20 meters in height. Please note that the walking trails are closed during the winter season (early November to mid-April), so viewing is primarily done from the Kawahara Yu Bridge.
Walking the trails to feel the energy of the earth is the essence of visiting Oyasukyo. Getting close to the steam vents provides a unique sensory experience found nowhere else. After your walk, you can soothe your muscles at the nearby hot spring facilities. The area is also a great place to enjoy local delicacies, such as authentic Inaniwa Udon. For those interested in geology, guided tours are available to provide deeper insight into the natural formations.
The Oyasukyo Onsen village is located right next to the gorge, offering various inns and public baths, making it an ideal spot for an overnight stay. Other nearby attractions include the 'Reijo Gara Hell' (Karasu-moke Jigoku) and various forest-bathing areas, which are popular additions to a sightseeing itinerary in the region.
While the trails are maintained, there are many stairs, so sturdy walking shoes are essential. Be extra cautious during winter or inclement weather. Near the steam vents, please stay within the safe designated areas to avoid burns or steam exposure. As this is a natural area, please be aware of local wildlife like bears and wild boars. Regarding payments, it is highly recommended to check in advance if you will need cash or if credit cards/IC cards are accepted at nearby facilities.
