Oyama Jinja is a historic shrine located in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture. It enshrines Toshiie Maeda, the famous lord of the Kaga Clan, and his family, making it deeply intertwined with the history of Kanazawa. A unique feature of this shrine is that it is built on the former site of the 'Kanaya Goten,' a villa used by the Kaga Clan lords. Consequently, the shrine grounds are filled with magnificent historical architecture and an incredibly atmospheric and beautiful garden.
The site stands on the former grounds of the Kanaya Goten, a villa once used by the lords of the Kaga Clan. The 'Shin-en' garden, a stroll garden designed in the pond-stroll style, remains as a testament to the area's high historical value. The shrine serves as a vital cultural landmark, enshrining Toshiie Maeda—a symbol of the Kaga Clan—and his wife, O-matsu, allowing visitors to connect with the profound history of the Maeda lineage.
One of the most iconic-looking structures at Oyama Jinja is the 'Shinmon' (Shrine Gate), which is designated as a National Important Cultural Property. Its heavy, dignified presence allows visitors to feel the weight of history. Additionally, the ceiling of the worship hall features the 'Udonge' (the legendary flower) painted with mineral pigments, a precious design transferred from the original Kanaya Goten. You can also enjoy a tranquil moment wandering through the 'Shin-en' garden, exploring islands and bridges named after elements of Gagaku (ancient imperial court music).
The Shin-en garden reveals different expressions depending on the season. The way the islands and bridges floating in the pond change under different light and wind conditions creates a different impression depending on the time of day. During the bright daylight hours, the colors of the garden appear vivid, while toward evening, you can enjoy the shadows of the historical buildings in a more subdued, peaceful atmosphere. The shrine also hosts monthly events, such as the 'Otsuitachi-mairi' (first of the month visit), adding to its seasonal charm.
Beyond simple prayer, visitors can enjoy a contemplative stroll through history. In the area of the garden known as the 'Instrument Garden,' you can search for the origins of names like Hoshosho Island, Biwa Island, Torikabuto Island, and Koto Bridge, which are all related to Gagaku elements. During certain periods, you may also experience the atmosphere of traditional festivals, such as those related to the 'Hyakumangoku Festival,' which celebrates the local heritage.
Located in the heart of Kanazawa, Oyama Jinja is conveniently situated near major tourist destinations such as Kanazawa Castle Park, Kenrokuen Garden, and the Higashi Chaya District. It is an ideal stop while walking through the historic streets of the city. Access from Kanazawa Station is easy via taxi or local bus.
When visiting, it is appropriate to wear modest clothing suitable for a shrine. As the grounds contain stone paths and unpaved areas, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please prepare cash for purchasing amulets (omamori) or paying for offerings (goshu-ryo). If you wish to request a formal prayer (gokito), advanced reservation via phone or internet is required. Please respect the sanctity of the shrine by maintaining a quiet demeanor and following photography etiquette.
