Oyama Afuri Shrine is a majestic shrine situated on Mt. Oyama (elevation 1,251m) in Isehara, Kanagawa Prefecture. For centuries, this area has been a site of deep devotion to the gods of water and mountains, as well as protective deities of the sea. The name 'Oyama' is often associated with the clouds and mist that frequently shroud the peak. As a prominent independent peak overlooking the Kanto Plain, it has served as a spiritual cornerstone for the people throughout history.
The origins of the shrine date back over 2,200 years. Throughout its long history, the site practiced the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism. During the eras of military rule, many Shoguns visited the shrine to pray for military success and good fortune. The discovery of Jomon pottery fragments near the summit further proves that this has been a significant site of spiritual worship since prehistoric times.

The shrine is characterized by its seamless integration with the natural landscape. The grounds undergo stunning transformations with the seasons, from the vibrant greenery of summer to the fiery hues of autumn. Visitors can experience living traditions through Shinto rituals, Kagura dances, and traditional performing arts like Noh and Kyogen. On clear days, the summit offers a breathtaking panoramic view that extends to Sagami Bay and even Enoshima island.
While the shrine is accessible year-round, each season offers a unique charm. Spring brings fresh greenery, while autumn provides spectacular foliage. Traditional festivals, such as the Setsubun festival and the 'Yama-biraki' (mountain opening) ceremonies, are held throughout the year. We recommend visiting during daylight hours to fully appreciate the clarity of the mountain scenery and the vast views from the top.

Beyond worship, the area is perfect for hiking and mountain climbing. A popular route involves taking the cable car to the lower shrine and then hiking through the forest. During specific ritual periods, you may also witness the profound atmosphere of ancient ceremonies being performed.
The area around the shrine features well-maintained hiking trails for nature lovers. After your visit, you can relax at local teahouses or cafes to enjoy the mountain air. There are also various accommodations and dining options in the vicinity, making it a great base for exploring the Mt. Oyama area.

When visiting or hiking, please wear comfortable clothing and sturdy walking shoes. Be mindful of temperature changes and weather shifts as you ascend the mountain. To respect the sacred atmosphere, please follow traditional Shinto etiquette and maintain a quiet demeanor.
