Otsuka Seikai-ji Historical Park is a beautifully maintained park located on the grounds of Seikai-ji, a historic temple in Inazawa City, Aichi Prefecture. This site is celebrated as a space where rich cultural heritage and lush botanical beauty coexist. It is particularly famous during the early summer season when approximately 10,000 hydrangeas from 90 different varieties paint the landscape in vibrant colors. Visitors can experience the changing seasons through these flowers while admiring the ancient architectural structures of the temple.
The origins of this site date back approximately 1,200 years to the Konyo era (810–824), with tradition stating the temple was founded by the Buddhist monk Kobo Daishi (Kukai). Throughout its long history, the temple has enjoyed the patronage of many prominent figures, including Hojo Tokiyori, Ashikaga Takauji, Oda Nobunaga, Asano Nagamasa, Matsudaira Tadayoshi, and Tokugawa Yoshioka. In 1992, parts of the temple grounds were developed into the current Otsuka Seikai-ji Historical Park. The numerous cultural assets preserved here serve as a testament to the spiritual and historical significance of this land.
The park features several structures of immense historical value. A primary highlight is the Main Hall, a designated Important Cultural Property. Believed to have been constructed during the Keian era, the hall is a precious architectural piece that still retains medieval structural elements. Additionally, the 2.6-meter tall pagoda enshrined within the hall is also a designated Important Cultural Property, offering a profound sense of history. Other cultural assets, such as the Tahoto pagoda, are scattered throughout the area, allowing visitors to witness Japan's architectural heritage up close.
The absolute highlight of the park is the early summer season. Around June 1st, the "Inazawa Ajisai Matsuri" (Hydrangea Festival) begins. During this time, the park is filled with a diverse range of hydrangeas, from traditional Japanese varieties like "Kurenai," "Hanabi," and "Jogori" to Western varieties like "Annabelle." Because the varieties and blooming patterns change depending on the specific timing, visiting in early June is highly recommended for the best experience.
Visitors can enjoy observing seasonal flowers and the incredible biodiversity of the hydrangea collection, which features about 90 different types. The park also offers a peaceful environment to contemplate history while surrounded by nature.
