Otsuka Kofun is a keyhole-shaped burial mound (zenpo-koen-fun) located in Keisen, Fukuoka Prefecture, dating back to the first half of the 6th century. It was discovered by chance in 1934 during excavation work. The most striking feature of this site is the vibrant decorative murals painted on the walls of the stone chamber. The walls are adorned with intricate patterns in colors such as red, yellow, green, black, white, and gray. Due to this magnificent display, it is considered one of the pinnacles of Japan's decorated kofun (burial mounds). In 1952, it was designated as a Special National Historic Site.
The mound is believed to have been constructed during the early 6th century, toward the end of the Kofun period. The artifacts excavated from the site—including horse trappings, weapons, bronze mirrors, ornaments, and pottery—provide a profound look into the social structure and culture of the era. The value of these decorative murals is immense; the patterns, such as quivers (arrow holders), shields, riders, bead motifs, and various geometric designs, serve as vital historical records of the aesthetics and spiritual beliefs of ancient Japan.

Please note that the interior of the stone chamber is not accessible during regular hours. The actual burial chamber is only open to the public twice a year, during special opening periods in spring and autumn. To see the actual murals inside the tomb, you must plan your visit around these specific dates. The Otsuka Decorative Kofun Museum is open outside of these special periods, allowing visitors to view the artifacts and use the multilingual audio guides at any time.
At the Otsuka Decorative Kofun Museum, you can enjoy an immersive experience through a multilingual audio guide service.
