Otome Falls (Otome no Taki) is a beautiful waterfall flowing from the Sawaname River, located in the Itashiro area of Nasu Shiobara, Tochigiken. While relatively small, with a width of approximately 5 meters and a drop of about 10 meters, it is characterized by the harmonious blend of its pure water flow and the surrounding natural environment. The air around the falls is exceptionally crisp and clean, making it a perfect sanctuary for those seeking peace and tranquility.
The waterfall's beautiful name is rooted in local folklore. According to legend, the name was inspired by the way the flowing water resembles the elegant hair or the silhouette of a maiden. Local stories also tell of a young fisherman who once witnessed a beautiful maiden appearing above the falls, and legends of mermaids are also passed down through the generations, adding a layer of cultural mystery to this scenic spot.

The greatest charm of Otome Falls lies in its pure, crystalline water. There are vantage points where you can see the back of the waterfall basin, allowing you to feel the power and sound of the water up close. From the parking area, a set of stairs leads down about 30 meters to a viewing platform, where you can fully enjoy the impact of the falling water. It is also possible to descend an additional 30 meters toward the base of the falls.
Otome Falls is a wonderful spot to enjoy nature throughout the year. It is particularly breathtaking during the seasons of fresh greenery, when the vibrant white of the water contrasts beautifully with the lush surroundings, and during the autumn foliage season when the trees turn colorful. During the bright daylight hours, the sunlight reflecting off the water spray creates a truly magical sight.
This is a place to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and listen to the sounds of nature. You can refresh your spirit by listening to the rhythmic sound of the waterfall amidst the clean mountain air.
