Otobaru Falls is nestled on the slopes of Mt. Funbara, located to the south of Mt. Tsurumi in the Otobaru area of Beppu, Oita Prefecture. This site features a unique two-tiered structure: the grand Otaki (Male Falls) with a 60m drop, and the elegant Metaki (Female Falls) with a 30m drop. The surrounding landscape is defined by lush greenery and the constant, rhythmic sound of water hitting the rocks, often accompanied by a fine, misty spray that creates a magical atmosphere. Despite its proximity to the urban areas of Beppu, the falls offer a sense of profound stillness and mystery.
The name 'Otobaru' is deeply connected to the history of the area, believed to be derived from the resonant sound of the falling water. The site is also steeped in local legend, specifically the tale of the Ryujin (Dragon God) serpent, which has inspired a sense of reverence for the natural world in this region for generations. This connection between nature and myth gives the location a spiritual depth that visitors can feel.
The primary draw is the contrasting character of the two waterfalls. The Otaki (Male Falls) displays a powerful, dynamic flow, while the Metaki (Female Falls) is celebrated for its graceful descent between the cliffs. The sight of fresh, green moss clinging to the wet rock walls and the way the sunlight catches the water spray makes this an exceptional spot for photography. You may also find small shrines or Jizo statues nearby, reflecting the way Japanese spiritual traditions are woven into the natural landscape.
While beautiful year-round, the falls are particularly striking during seasons of high water volume or when the fresh greenery of spring and summer is at its peak. Visiting during the morning hours is highly recommended, as the sunlight piercing through the mist creates a dazzling, shimmering effect. The deep greens of the surrounding forest also provide a refreshing, cooling sensation during the warmer months.
Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll while listening to the symphony of nature. The air near the falls is often filled with a fine mist, providing a sensory experience of being one with the elements. Please note that the terrain around the falls can be uneven and slippery due to the water spray, so a calm, observant walk is best for enjoying the scenery.
The area around Otobaru Falls is well-connected to other Beppu attractions, such as Beppu Rakutenchi. You may even catch a glimpse of the falls from the Oita Expressway. The location is also a great starting point for a scenic drive through nearby natural landmarks like the Kokonoe Kankei (river valleys) or Shiraito Falls, making it an ideal addition to an Oita sightseeing itinerary.
While the paths are generally accessible, some sections can be uneven or slippery. We recommend wearing sturdy walking shoes or even rubber boots (long boots) depending on the weather. Since the mist can make you wet, bringing a waterproof jacket or a cover for your camera equipment is a wise idea.
