Otayama Jinja is a shrine located in Setana Town, Hiyama District, Hokkaido. Its most striking feature is its location near the summit of Mt. Ota (elevation 485m), which rises sharply from a cliffside. The journey to the main shrine (Honden) is a true test of endurance, featuring steep stairs with an average 40-degree incline, a 16-meter-long iron chain bridge (approx. 1m wide), and a vertical climb using a 7-meter iron chain hanging from the cliff. Because of this intense physical challenge, it is often referred to as an "extreme pilgrimage."
Otayama Jinja is one of the westernmost shrines on the Hokkaido mainland and possesses a long history dating back to the Kanki era. It is said to have begun when Takeda Nobuhiro landed in the area and bestowed the title of "Ota Gongen" upon the deity. Since then, it has been deeply revered by local communities as a guardian of maritime safety. The main shrine, nestled within a natural rock cavity, serves as a powerful symbol of protection for those navigating the treacherous seas.

The greatest highlight is the rugged route itself. The trek begins by climbing steep stairs and navigating mountain paths through dense vegetation. Next, you must cross a 16-meter-long iron chain bridge suspended over a valley. The final and most intense challenge is the 7-meter iron chain hanging from the cliff face. You must grip this chain firmly to scale the near-vertical wall to finally reach the Torii gate of the Honden. The shrine itself is a modest structure, roughly 2.5 to 3 meters in height, width, and depth, tucked securely into a natural rock hollow.
Visiting the shrine requires preparation similar to mountain climbing, and you must be mindful of seasonal changes. The period from March to September is generally the most suitable for activity. However, depending on the weather and ground conditions, the steepness and the handling of the iron chains can become extremely difficult. It is highly recommended to plan your visit during daylight hours on clear, sunny days to ensure safety.

This is not a typical sightseeing visit; it is a physical challenge. The process of aiming for the 485m summit involves a rigorous trek of approximately 100 minutes to ascend and 70 minutes to descend. Through the steep stairs, rocky terrain, and the use of iron chains, visitors experience a profound connection between the awe of nature and traditional spiritual devotion.
Setana, where Otama Jinja is located, derives its name from the Ainu language word "Setarpespennai," meaning "the river where a dog swims." The area is surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes, including the Hiyama Prefectural Natural Park and the Karibamotsu Natural Park, offering a unique geographical charm found only at the western edge of Hokkaido.

Preparation for a mountain climb is essential. You must wear sturdy hiking boots or athletic shoes with excellent grip capable of handling steep inclines; sandals or heels are strictly prohibited for safety. Be prepared for sudden weather changes and carry appropriate gear. Please respect the natural environment and adhere to all safety rules during your pilgrimage.
