Otaru Aquarium, located in Shukutsu, Otaru City, Hokkaido, is a premier destination for exploring the marine life of the Hokkaido region. The facility focuses on the unique ecosystems of Hokkaido and its surrounding cold-water environments, showcasing a wide variety of fish and marine organisms. With its expansive grounds and naturalistic exhibit designs, visitors can feel the true essence of the northern sea.
Managed by the Otaru Aquarium Public Corporation, the institution has long played a vital role in sharing the beauty and mystery of Hokkaido's oceans. Beyond simple exhibition, the facility is dedicated to the management of biological species and educational activities that promote understanding of the local natural environment.
The main building features 62 tanks showcasing fish native to Hokkaido and other subarctic regions. Notable exhibits include sea turtles and the delicate sea angel (Clione). You can also explore large-scale tanks featuring sharks and rays. The facility is a sturdy reinforced concrete structure spanning from the B1 level to the 2nd floor.
The aquarium typically operates from mid-March through late November. Because the behavior of the marine life and the surrounding environment changes with the seasons, you can experience a different side of the aquarium depending on when you visit. As operating hours may vary by season, we highly recommend checking the official website before your visit.
Visitors can observe the natural behaviors of various marine species in detail. In addition to the main building, the complex includes the Sea Otter Park and the Penguin Stadium, where different biological displays and much more interactive experiences are available. Wandering through these diverse areas offers a deep understanding of the biological diversity found in Hokkaido's seas.
The facility offers ample parking with space for approximately 1,000 vehicles, making it very accessible by car. The site also features rest areas, souvenir shops, and restaurants, allowing you to enjoy a full day of leisure. Nearby attractions include the Otaru Shukutsu Marine Land area, adding to the charm of the coastal district.
Please prepare clothing suitable for the temperature, as the indoor environment may change depending on the season and weather. For accessibility, the facility offers stroller and wheelchair rental services. While service animals like guide dogs and assistance dogs are welcome, please note that general pets are not permitted inside the premises.
