Otaru Khibokan is a cultural destination located in Shuktsu, Otaru, Hokkaido, where history, architecture, and fine dining converge. The site features the "Former Aoyama Villa," a registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan built during the Taisho era. This estate serves as a breathtaking reminder of the era when the herring fishing industry brought immense wealth to the region. As you wander through the expansive, meticulously manicured gardens, you can admire the intricate architectural details of the villa and the seasonal beauty of the landscape. The on-site restaurant serves exquisite dishes featuring local seafood and the famous "Nishin Kanroni" (sweet-simmered herring), allowing guests to dine in a truly historic atmosphere.
The heart of this site, the "Former Aoyama Villa," was built by the Aoyama family, who amassed great wealth through the herring fishing industry. The design of the villa was influenced by the Honma House in Sakata, Yamagata Prefecture, and took approximately six and a half years to complete, starting from 1917. This architecture symbolizes the lifestyle of the wealthy elite and the vibrant culture of Hokkaido during its most prosperous fishing era. In 2010, its historical significance was officially recognized when it was designated as a national Tangible Cultural Property. It stands not just as a building, but as a vital cultural heritage site that tells the story of Hokkaido's modernization and fishing history.
The primary highlight is the architectural style of the Former Aoyama Villa. Guests can marvel at the luxurious decorations and the spatial layout that reflects the lifestyle of the early 20th century. The surrounding gardens are equally essential to the experience; the seasonal changes in the garden create a harmonious and beautiful backdrop for the villa. From the restaurant seating, you can enjoy a seamless blend of visual beauty and culinary delight, taking in the surrounding scenery while you dine.
