Guide
Otako Coast is a beautiful coastal area located in Nishi-Izu Town, Shizuoka Prefecture. This region is widely known as a 'Town of Sunsets,' and Otako Coast stands out as a premier location, having been selected as one of the '100 Best Sunsets in Japan.' The coastline is dotted with small islands, providing a spectacular backdrop for the setting sun. A particularly striking feature is the natural rock formations, such as the 'Megane-tcho' (spectacle rock) with its unique hole, which adds a sense of wonder to the seascape.
The Nishi-Izu area has a long history rooted in fishing and, from the Meiji to Showa eras, the processing of dried bonito (katsuobushi). The Otako district also has a history of being an active area for shipbuilding-related industries. Today, the natural environment surrounding this coast is protected as part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. This ensures that the breathtaking natural beauty and the cultural history of the region are preserved for visitors to enjoy through scenic sightseeing.

The greatest draw of Otako Coast is the view of the sun descending toward the horizon. During the periods around the spring and autumn equinoxes, the sun appears to sink directly between the offshore islands, a phenomenon that attracts many photographers and tourists from around the world. The rugged coastline, featuring unique rock formations like the 'Megane-tcho,' creates a dramatic silhouette against the sunset. The shifting colors of the sky and the sea throughout the day offer a mesmerizing experience that never fails to captivate visitors.
For the most spectacular views, we recommend visiting around the spring and autumn equinoxes. During these times, you can witness the rare sight of the sun passing through the gaps between specific islands. If you visit during the summer (July–September), the area is also suitable for enjoying the bright blue ocean. To fully enjoy the sunset, it is highly recommended to arrive 30 to 60 minutes before sunset to observe the beautiful color gradients in the sky.

The primary activity here is landscape photography, utilizing the stunning natural scenery. Nishi-Izu Town holds annual photo contests, and beautiful spots like Otako Coast are highly popular among professional and amateur photographers. The area is also perfect for a relaxing stroll along the coast to appreciate the natural rock formations. Please note that as this is a natural environment, visitors should always prioritize safety while walking near the shore.
There are many charming spots to explore near Otako Coast. At Koganezaki, you can see the cliffs glowing in golden light as the sun sets, often with views of Mt. Fuji. At Dogashima, you can enjoy sightseeing boat cruises and explore famous scenic spots like Tenshodo Cave. Additionally, the surrounding area features several hot spring (onsen) facilities, allowing you to relax in a warm bath after a day of enjoying the coastal views.
Access to Otako Coast is available via public transportation or by car. Free parking is available near the coast. Since temperatures can drop after sunset, it is convenient to bring a light jacket or wrap. Please keep the following in mind:
