Otaguro Park is a tranquil urban park located in Ogikubo, Suginami City, Tokyo, established on the grounds of a former historic estate. The park was created following the wishes of the renowned music critic Motoo Otagero, whose family donated the land to Suginami Ward with the request that a portion of the estate remain as a public park. The most striking feature of this park is its "Wayo Setchu" style—a harmonious blend of traditional Japanese stroll garden techniques and Western architectural influences. As you wander through the grounds, you will experience a unique space where nature and architecture coexist in perfect balance.
The park officially opened on October 1, 1981. It was developed from the former residence of Motoo Otaguro, honoring his legacy. A significant piece of history preserved here is the beautiful brick Western-style building constructed in 1933. Originally used as an atelier, it now serves as a memorial hall, serving as a cultural touchstone that connects the local community to its past. The park is not just a green space but a site of significant cultural heritage.
The park offers diverse landscapes that showcase the beauty of nature. The ginkgo tree avenue leading from the main gate changes colors with the seasons, welcoming visitors with vibrant hues. The garden is designed as a "stroll garden" (kaiyu-shiki), meaning the scenery changes with every step you take around the central pond and through the paths lined with ancient trees. The sight of the historic brick memorial hall appearing amidst the traditional Japanese greenery provides a stunning contrast, epitomizing the unique fusion of East and West that defines Otaguro Park.
While beautiful year-round, the park is most spectacular from October to November during the autumn foliage season, when the ginkgo trees and garden foliage turn brilliant shades of gold and red. A special highlight occurs from late November to early December, when the park hosts autumn illumination events. During this period, the park extends its hours to allow visitors to experience the ethereal beauty of the illuminated autumn leaves after sunset—a truly magical sight in the quietude of the night.
Visitors can enjoy a relaxing time at the on-site rest areas or the traditional tea house while gazing at the garden scenery. Beyond simple walking, exploring the memorial hall allows you to feel the cultural atmosphere of a bygone era. Following the winding paths of the stroll garden allows for a meditative experience as the landscape shifts between ponds, seasonal plantings, and historic structures.
The area surrounding Otaguro Park is a peaceful residential neighborhood. Nearby, you can visit the Suginami City Local Museum to further explore the history of the region, making it a great part of a cultural walking tour. The park is easily accessible from JR Ogikubo Station on the Chuo Line, making it a convenient destination for travelers coming from central Tokyo. There are also several local cafes and eateries in the vicinity.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes (such as sneakers) as the paths follow the natural terrain of the garden. While the park is well-maintained, some areas may have uneven surfaces.
