Oshitoishi no Oka is a scenic highland area located at an altitude of 845 meters in Minamioguni Town, Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture. This site is dotted with various large and small stones known as the "Oshito no Ishi." The most striking feature is a massive, pyramid-shaped megalith standing 5.5 meters high with a circumference of 15.3 meters. Due to its unique shape and arrangement, many believe this site to be an ancient ruin. The landscape offers a breathtaking coexistence of raw nature and stones that appear to have been placed with human intent.
Local legends tell tales of ogres (oni) playing with these stones during the night. More scientifically intriguing is the presence of petroglyphs—rock carvings—on the large stones, which some researchers suggest may be related to Sumerian script from approximately 4,000 years ago. Because the arrangement of the stones suggests artificial placement, the area remains a subject of great interest for archaeologists and those fascinated by ancient civilizations and the traces of lost cultures.
