Osezan Park is a scenic urban park located in the northwest of Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, situated along the scenic Gono River. The park itself functions as a small mountain, offering a rich natural environment where visitors can enjoy seasonal landscapes such as cherry blossoms in spring and colorful foliage in autumn. The summit stands at an elevation of approximately 202m, providing a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view of the Miyoshi cityscape. This area is deeply rooted in history, blending natural beauty with the legacy of the Edo period.
The name "Osezan" is derived from Ozeki Masakatsu, a high-ranking official under Fukushima Masanori during the early Edo period. Later, the area was governed by the Asano clan. As the Bitchu-Miyoshi domain developed, the "Hakumo-kaku" astronomical observatory was established on the summit. The park is also home to various cultural relics, including a statue of Princess Akuri (Yosen-in), the third daughter of Asano Chiji, and a monument dedicated to the poet Nakamura Kenkichi, making it a place where local history and nature coexist.
The park boasts a diverse variety of flora, particularly a rich collection of cherry trees. Visitors can enjoy different species such as Yaezakura (double-flowered cherry), Botan (peony cherry), Shidarezakura (weeping cherry), Higanzakura, and Somei Yoshino, which bloom at different times throughout the season. Along the southeastern foot near the Gono River, the "Ouzu Dote" features a stunning 500-meter stretch of cherry trees. From the summit observatory, you can enjoy a 360-degree view of Miyoshi, which is particularly stunning on clear days. Other significant historical sites include the 80cm-tall Kirishitan (Christian) stone lantern and the remains of the former astronomical observatory.
The landscape changes dramatically with the seasons. Spring (April) is the peak season for cherry blossoms, especially during the "Miyoshi Sakura Festival." Autumn (October and November) offers vibrant foliage. The park often hosts light-up events during spring and autumn, creating a magical atmosphere at night. Daytime is ideal for walking, while the evening is perfect for watching the sunset over the city from the observatory.
The park features extensive walking paths through lush nature, perfect for seasonal plant observation and hiking. The path to the summit follows the natural terrain, offering much more than just a walk—it is a scenic journey. You can also enjoy the view of the river flowing through the cherry tree-lined path along the Gono River. Exploring the historical monuments provides a deep connection to the local culture.
Just south of the park, the "Iwai Bridge," the oldest steel bridge in the prefecture, spans the Gono River. Additionally, Hogen-ji Temple, known for its connection to the legendary Chushingura (47 Ronin) story, is located nearby. These spots allow you to trace the historical landscape of Miyoshi.
As the park is part of a mountain, the terrain includes slopes and uneven paths; comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Toilets are available on-site. If visiting during light-up events, please dress appropriately for the evening temperature. While entrance to the park is free, please carry cash for any local transportation or food expenses in the surrounding area.
