Oze Ukai offers a spectacular viewing experience of traditional cormorant fishing on the Nagara River in Seki City, Gifu Prefecture. As night falls, the river transforms into a scene reminiscent of a classical Japanese handscroll painting. The deep darkness of the night is illuminated by the flickering red glow of bonfires (Kagaribi), while the sight of the cormorants diving into the water at the command of the master fisherman (Ukai-shi) creates a truly mystical atmosphere. This fishing method, boasting a history of over 1,000 years, remains faithfully preserved today, showcasing a unique harmony between nature, humans, and birds.
The history of cormorant fishing in this region is incredibly ancient, with mentions dating back to the Nara period. Historically, this practice enjoyed the patronage of the Imperial Court and powerful leaders. There are even theories linking the lineage of certain master fishermen to the famous warlord Oda Nobunaga, highlighting the deep connection between this tradition and Japan's samurai history. Today, the art is passed down through generations of skilled practitioners who maintain the traditional techniques. The combination of the clear Nagara River, the seasonal Ayu (sweetfish), and the mastery of the Ukai-shi makes this a vital cultural symbol of the region.
The most exciting part of the experience is the 'Kari-kudari' (hunting descent), where the fishing boats and observation boats move down the river together. From your seat, you can observe the intense action up close: the cormorants diving into the water one after another in response to the master's rhythmic calls. Depending on the river's flow and water levels, you may also witness 'Tsuke-mise,' where the fishing takes place near moored observation boats, allowing you to feel the raw energy and movement of the river right beside you.
