Located in Sanbongi, Osaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, "Himawari no Oka" (Sunflower Hill) is a vast natural area. Its most striking feature is the breathtaking expanse of rapeseed blossoms covering 6 hectares. During the spring season, approximately 2 million rapeseed flowers bloom, creating an iconic landscape that symbolizes the region.
This region has a long history of hosting events centered around the seasonal blooming of local flora. The annual "Rapeseed Blossom Festival" (Nanohana Matsuri) is a well-established event that celebrates the natural beauty of the area and serves as a way to pass local culture and traditions down to future generations. The festival also acts as a community hub, with special stalls set up for locals and visitors to interact.

The ultimate highlight is the sea of yellow that stretches as far as the eye can see. The scale of 2 million rapeseed flowers creates a view that can only be experienced here. During the festival period, special vendor stalls are established within the venue, offering a variety of local specialties and regional products for sale.
The best time to visit is from March to April, coinciding with the peak blooming period of the rapeseed flowers. During this time, the festival is in full swing and the atmosphere is vibrant. Visiting during the bright daylight hours is highly recommended, as the sunlight makes the vivid yellow of the blossoms appear even more brilliant and striking.

During the festival, you can enjoy the lively atmosphere of the special vendor stalls. These stalls offer a chance to taste and purchase local specialties, allowing you to experience the flavors and products of the region firsthand. It is a perfect opportunity to feel the local culture while surrounded by beautiful natural scenery.
The area around Osaki City is dotted with many spots where you can enjoy nature and history. For instance, the nearby Naruko, Osaki, and Kurihara areas offer numerous facilities for enjoying hot springs (onsen) and scenic landscapes. You can easily incorporate visits to historical temples, shrines, and other seasonal flower parks into your travel itinerary.

Since you will be moving through a large outdoor area, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please prepare clothing suitable for the outdoor weather and season.
