The Osaka Prefectural Nakanoshima Library is a public library located in the Nakanoshima district of Kita-ku, Osaka. It is famous for its stunning Neo-Renaissance exterior and is officially designated as a national Important Cultural Property. More than just a place to borrow books, it serves as a vital cultural station for the Nakanoshima area. The facility includes specialized rooms such as the Business Reference Room and the Osaka Materials & Classical Books Room.
The main building was completed in 1904, with subsequent expansions and renovations, including the addition of the left and right wings in 1922. Remarkably, the building survived the air raids of the Osaka Great Air Raid during WWII. In 1974, the main building and both wings were designated as Important Cultural Properties. The architecture maintains a Western-style elegance, serving as a well-preserved testament to the history of Osaka's modernization.
The greatest draw is the Neo-Renaissance architectural design. Visitors can browse books and documents within a space filled with historical charm. Additionally, you can explore precious historical data through the "Osaka e-Collection" digital archive. The library also features the "Smørrebrød Kitchen Nakanoshima," a cafe serving traditional Danish open-faced sandwiches, and a library shop selling stationery and lifestyle goods, allowing you to enjoy a sophisticated cultural environment.
The library is open from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM on weekdays, and from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Saturdays. On weekday evenings, the library offers a calm, tranquil atmosphere perfect for deep study or reading, distinct from the bright daytime hours. Please note that services such as the Digital Information Room reception, document requests, microfilm usage, and photocopying requests are closed 30 minutes before the library's closing time. The library is a peaceful retreat regardless of the season.
Beyond standard reading, the library is an excellent place for specialized research and utilizing digital archives. You can conduct investigations into specific themes, such as business-related data or the history of Osaka. For a relaxing break, visit the on-site cafe to enjoy Smørrebrød—one of the earliest specialty shops of its kind in Western Japan. The library also offers extensive document retrieval services, including requests from the National Diet Library.
The library is nestled between the Osaka City Hall and the Osaka Central Public Hall. It is adjacent to Nakanoshima Park, making it an ideal stop during a stroll through the park. The surrounding area is rich in historic buildings, making the library a key part of a cultural walking route through the Nakanoshima district.
As this is a library, visitors are expected to maintain a quiet and respectful environment. There is no specific dress code, but please refrain from eating or drinking outside of the designated cafe and specific areas. Procedures for document copying, microfilm use, or research requests must be completed at least 30 minutes before closing. For those picking up reserved materials, proxy pickup may be possible under certain conditions.
