The Mitake Panorama Line refers to the section of Gifu Prefectural Road 441 (the Nigoro Onsen Line) that connects Kosaka Town in Gero City to Nigoro Onsen. The greatest highlight of this route is the ability to gaze upon the sacred Mt. Mitake directly from your car window. Additionally, the route offers viewpoints where you can observe the massive scale of Japan's longest lava flow, allowing travelers to witness the magnificent formations of nature through a scenic drive. The route is designed to run along the base of the ridge, tracing the boundary between Gero City and Takayama City.
This route was formerly known as the "Prefectural Road Ochiai Hida-Kosaka Station Line." Following a route change on March 24, 2017, it was renamed the current "Prefectural Road Nigoro Onsen Line," with its starting and ending points also being adjusted. Today, it is a well-maintained sightseeing route starting near Ochiai in Kosaka Town, Gero, leading toward the hot spring area of Nigoro Onsen. This region has a long history of tourism centered around its natural environment and hot spring culture.
The primary attraction of this route is the view of Mt. Mitake. The silhouette of the sacred mountain, located to the east of the starting point, displays a different and captivating expression depending on the season and weather conditions. Another characteristic feature is the topographical variety, including sections that follow the Kosaka River and winding paths that weave through the mountainous terrain. Near the end of the route, the Hida River (a tributary of the Kiso River) flows through, offering beautiful riverside scenery.
The best time to visit the Mitake Panorama Line depends on the season. In early summer, the landscape is filled with lush greenery, while in autumn, the mountains are draped in vibrant colors. The autumn foliage season is particularly recommended as the change in scenery is most dramatic. Because the route is highly winding to accommodate the mountainous terrain, it is highly recommended to drive during daylight hours for better visibility and safety.
The primary way to experience this area is through driving. The journey itself toward Nigoro Onsen is an activity of sightseeing and relaxation. Additionally, the surrounding area features locations used for high-altitude training and various campsites that utilize the natural environment, making this an excellent destination for travelers looking to combine a scenic drive with outdoor activities.
Near the end of the route lies Nigoro Onsen, one of Japan's highest-altitude hot spring areas. The surrounding area also features hiking routes for Mt. Mitake and natural spots such as the Kurutojima Campground. These locations serve as perfect destinations to visit after completing your drive.
Driving through mountain roads requires caution. There are several sections where the road narrows to a single lane, and many sharp curves, so please drive carefully. Note that large buses (8 meters or longer) are prohibited from this route.
