Guide
Ontake 2240 Ski Resort (formerly known as Ontake Ski Resort) is a premier destination located in Otaki Village, Nagano Prefecture, situated at the foot of the majestic Mount Ontake. Since its establishment in 1961, it has served as a beloved hub for winter sports in the region. Visitors can enjoy skiing and snowboarding against the backdrop of the grand scenery of Mount Ontake, offering a truly immersive natural experience. The resort is currently managed by Shishi Co., Ltd., ensuring a well-maintained and community-rooted operation.
The history of this resort dates back to 1961, when it was opened by Otaki Village as the "Kokusetsu Ontake Ski Resort." Over the decades, the facility has evolved alongside technological advancements, such as the installation of the "Skylub" gondola lift in 1989. In 2007, the name was changed to "Ontake 2240" to reflect its identity as a modern mountain resort. The resort has shown great resilience; even after the 2014 eruption of Mount Ontake, which caused temporary restrictions in certain areas, the resort has continued to thrive through community support and facility improvements. It remains a vital link between local culture and tourism.
The greatest draw of Ontake 2240 is the overwhelming view of Mount Ontake. The silhouette of the snow-capped mountains paired with the crisp, clear mountain air creates an extraordinary atmosphere for winter sports. The terrain features various courses, including the once-popular Champion Course, designed to utilize the natural landscape. Depending on the season, the surrounding natural scenery offers a beautiful visual feast even beyond the slopes.
The best time to visit is from January to March, when the snow quality is most stable and the scenery is at its most beautiful. January and February are ideal for serious snow activities. Please note that lift operating hours and schedules may change based on the season or weather conditions, so checking the official status before your visit is highly recommended. The bright daylight hours are perfect for photography, capturing the majestic presence of Mount Ontake.
Focusing on skiing and snowboarding, the resort offers a variety of mountain-based activities. The experience of gliding down the slopes via the lift is a highlight unique to this location. Because the resort is deeply integrated with the local community, visitors can enjoy a stay that feels authentic to the local atmosphere of Nagano.
The area surrounding the ski resort is filled with the rich natural beauty of Otaki Village. Due to its proximity to Mount Ontake, the region is highly compatible with other outdoor activities such as mountain climbing and nature observation. The changing-with-the-seasons environment makes it an attractive destination even for travelers seeking activities outside of skiing.
As this is a mountainous area in winter, thorough cold-weather protection is essential. We recommend heavy clothing, gloves, and hats. Please check the local status regarding ski/snowboard gear and rentals. We ask that all visitors respect the local environment and follow facility manners. Payment can be made via cash or credit card.
