The Onomichi Sumiyoshi Fireworks Festival is a celebrated event held annually in late July (typically the last Saturday of the month) in Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture. Locally known by the affectionate nickname "Sumiyossan," this festival is a beloved tradition. A unique characteristic of this event is the geography; because the area is surrounded by mountains on three sides, the sound of the exploding fireworks echoes and bounces off the slopes, creating an immersive acoustic experience. With approximately 13,000 fireworks launched each year, it is one of the largest-scale displays in Hiroshima Prefecture.
This festival is deeply rooted in the local culture of Onomichi. It is organized by the Onomichi Sumiyoshi Association and supported by the Onomichi City government, the Onomichi Chamber of Commerce, and the Onomichi Tourism Association. While the scale of events has occasionally been adjusted due to social circumstances in recent years, it remains a vital tradition for the community. Since 2007, the festival has featured a "Musical Fireworks" program, a sophisticated production where the fireworks are perfectly synchronized with music, becoming a signature element of the celebration.
The primary highlight is the sheer scale of the 13,000 fireworks filling the night sky, combined with the unique acoustic effect of the sounds reflecting off the surrounding mountains. The
