Onogawa Fudo Falls is a breathtaking 25-meter waterfall situated upstream of Lake Onogawa in Kitashiobara Village, Fukushima Prefecture. The site is named after Fudo Myoo, a Buddhist deity enshrined in the area, adding a spiritual dimension to its natural beauty. The water flowing here is part of the Onogawa spring water, which has been officially selected as one of Japan's "Top 100 Water Sources" due to its exceptional purity. The area is a perfect destination for those looking to immerse themselves in a lush, natural environment via a well-maintained walking path.
The landscape tells a story of industrial history; the hiking trail was originally constructed along the route of an old forest locomotive (torokko) railway. As you walk, you can observe the stone masonry remnants of former bridges, serving as a testament to the area's past. Furthermore, the presence of the Fudo Myoo shrine near the falls highlights the site's long-standing history as a place of religious devotion and spiritual significance.
The primary highlight is the sheer power of the 25-meter drop. The volume of water is particularly impressive from late April to early May during the snowmelt season. Beyond the waterfall itself, the historical stone structures along the path offer a unique glimpse into the region's industrial heritage. The surrounding environment is a dense, vibrant forest that provides a sense of complete isolation from the modern world.
The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. In Spring (late April to early May), the waterfall is at its most powerful due to snowmelt. Summer brings deep green foliage and a refreshing mist that cools the air. Autumn offers a spectacular display of colorful autumn leaves. In Winter, the area can be used for snowshoe trekking, but please note that solo hiking is discouraged; it is highly recommended to join a guided tour for safety.
The main activity is trekking the Onogawa Fudo Falls Trail, a path approximately 1 km long. The walk from the parking lot to the falls takes about 20 to 30 minutes one way. Please be prepared for a moderate hike, as the trail includes a total elevation gain of about 70m and features several steep stairs. While popular for hiking, the area is also used for seasonal activities like stream climbing in summer and snowshoeing in winter.
Located just upstream from the falls is the beautiful Lake Onogawa. The area is part of the larger Bandai Plateau and Urabandai sightseeing region, making it an excellent destination for a scenic driving tour or a day trip involving hiking and nature photography.
While the path is maintained, the terrain includes steep stairs and natural slopes, so sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots are essential. If visiting in winter, snowshoe equipment is required.
