Onishika Twin Beach is a nature-rich coastal area located in Obira, Rumoi District, Hokkaido. The most striking feature of this destination is the existence of two distinct areas: the "Closed Beach" and the "Open Beach." These adjacent beaches offer different atmospheres, allowing visitors to choose the perfect spot based on their preferences and intended activities. The area is well-equipped with facilities to enhance your seaside experience, making it a popular destination not just for swimming, but also for active leisure activities such as BBQ and camping.
This area has preserved its rich natural scenery as part of Hokkaido's beautiful coastline. The Obira region has a history deeply connected to the sea, once flourishing through the herring fishing industry. Today, while maintaining the cultural and natural environment that defines the region, the area has been developed into a recreational space where visitors can fully immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the coast. It offers a serene yet powerful landscape that reflects the lives of those who live in harmony with the ocean.
The appeal of Onishika Twin Beach lies in its versatility. The beaches are designed with consideration for waves and wind, providing a safer environment for seaside enjoyment. The Center House features a covered BBQ area, allowing you to enjoy meals while feeling the refreshing sea breeze. Additionally, the site is well-equipped with multi-purpose spaces and auto-camping sites, ensuring a comfortable stay. It is a perfectly balanced leisure environment where natural beauty meets convenient, man-made facilities.
The most recommended time to visit is during the summer (June to September) when swimming is in full swing. This is the ideal season to enjoy outdoor activities under the bright sun and witness the beautiful contrast between the blue sky and the sea. Please note that swimming is prohibited during early morning and late-night hours outside of designated operating times. To ensure a safe experience, it is important to visit during daylight hours. Additionally, as rules and sea conditions can change depending on the season, we recommend checking local information in advance.
Visitors can enjoy a wide range of activities integrated with nature. Beyond swimming, you can enjoy an outdoor lunch or dinner using the BBQ areas. The availability of auto-camping sites and multi-purpose spaces also allows for more extensive-stay leisure. Whether it is a relaxing time by the shore or deepening connections with family and friends through outdoor activities, the time spent here provides a precious opportunity to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life.
There are many charming spots to explore around Onishika Twin Beach that showcase the essence of Obira. You can visit cultural heritage sites like the Nishinya (herring house) to feel the local history, or find spots to taste local specialties like octopus. We recommend taking a scenic drive through the surrounding areas to enjoy the vast, quintessential landscapes of Hokkaido before or after your beach activities.
Proper preparation is essential for a successful beach day. Please bring swimwear, a change of clothes, towels, and a hat to protect yourself from the sun. If you plan to enjoy a BBQ, remember to bring your food and cooking utensils. For safety, please swim only within the areas marked by flags or buoy ropes. To protect the natural environment, please follow local rules: do not bring pets, do not collect shellfish or seafood, and always take your trash home with you.
