Onigajo is a spectacular coastal scenic spot located in Kumoto-cho, Kumano City, Mie Prefecture. It is registered as part of the UNESCO World Heritage site 'Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range' and was designated as a National Natural Monument in 1935. The landscape features countless sea caves of various sizes, carved by the powerful waves of the Kumano Sea. These caves are arranged in a step-like formation due to tectonic uplift, stretching approximately 1.2 km along the coastline. This unique geological formation is a precious landscape shaped by the raw power of nature.
The area is steeped in ancient legends and historical significance. One legend tells of Sakanoue no Tamaro, who supposedly subdued a pirate named Tagamaru who was terrorizing the area. Additionally, the site holds historical remains of the 'Onigajo Honjo' castle. This Japanese castle was built atop the mountain around 1523 by Arima Tadayoshi as a retirement residence. Although the Arima clan was eventually defeated by the Horiuchi clan, the Horiuchi family served Toyotomi Hideyoshi and ruled this land until the Battle of Sekigahara. On the hiking trail connecting the summit to the Matsumoto Pass of the Kumata Kodo, visitors can still see three 'kirikiri' (defensive trenches), offering a glimpse into the ancient castle's fortifications.
The greatest draw of Onigajo is the endless series of sea caves along the coast. The rugged rock faces and stepped terrain created by wave erosion offer a view found nowhere else. The area also includes the scenic 'Shishi-iwa' (Lion Rock), perfect for admiring natural sculptural beauty. Walking along the coast allows you to immerse yourself in the changing scenery, the sound of the waves, and the salty sea breeze. The hiking trail from the East Entrance to the summit offers a diverse natural landscape that changes with the seasons.
For a seasonal highlight, visit in the spring to see the cherry blossoms along the hiking trail from the East Entrance to the summit. With four different varieties of cherry blossoms blooming at different times, you can enjoy blossom viewing over an extended period. Additionally, the landscape changes beautifully with the light; visiting in the morning or late afternoon provides different perspectives of the scenery and light play.
Visitors can enjoy walking through natural scenic spots and exploring historical castle ruins and hiking trails. The route leading to the Kumata Kodo 'Matsumoto Pass' is particularly popular for those wishing to walk through history. A stroll along the coastline is a quintessential Onigajo experience. Near the site, the 'Onigajo Center' serves as a hub where you can gather travel information and browse local specialty products.
Several attractive sightseeing spots are scattered around Onigajo. Nearby is the Kumata Kodo (Iseji route) of the UNESCO World Heritage list, as well as the gentle sandy beaches of Shichiri Mihama. Other important nearby sites include the historic Matsumoto Pass, Benten Shrine, and Shishi-iwa. The area also features natural-rich locations like Otomari Beach.
