Oni no Shiro is an ancient mountain castle built upon Mount Ki castle in Soja City, Okayama Prefecture. Recognized as one of Japan's Top 100 Castles, it is also designated as a national historical site. Situated near the summit at an elevation of 397 meters on the southern edge of the Kibi Plateau, the site offers a unique landscape where history and nature seamlessly blend. The reconstructed West Gate and fortifications provide a striking visual representation of ancient Japanese defense systems.
The castle ruins are believed to have been constructed to defend the nation during the era of the Yamato Court. Archaeological excavations indicate the site dates back to the late 7th century. Much of its detailed history remains shrouded in mystery, as it is not explicitly recorded in classical historical texts. The site is also famously associated with the legend of Wara (On even/Onra), adding a layer of mythological intrigue. Today, the site is managed under the philosophy of an "outdoor museum of history and nature," with ongoing efforts in research, maintenance, and reconstruction.
The most striking features are the reconstructed West Gate, the corner tower, and the defensive walls. While the walls are primarily earthen embankments, the base of the walls features stone paving, showcasing elements of a stone castle. Additionally, a water gate is positioned at the front of the defense line, demonstrating ancient engineering designed to prevent erosion and collapse from flowing water. Visitors can also observe the foundations of ancient buildings and blacksmithing remains, offering a glimpse into ancient life and military-technical ingenuity. The visitor center features detailed models of the entire castle and the West Gate.
You can enjoy the changing seasons throughout the year. From March to May, the fresh greenery is particularly beautiful, making it an ideal season for hiking. From September to November, the mild autumn weather is perfect for exploring the ruins. While the West Gate itself is accessible 24 hours a day, it is highly recommended to visit the visitor center during standard daytime operating hours to utilize its facilities.

At the visitor center, you can engage with exhibits and guided explanations using models to better understand the structure of ancient mountain castles. The area also serves as a great base for nature observation, allowing for a relaxing walk through a landscape rich in both history and biodiversity.
The area surrounding the Oni-jo Yama Visitor Center is well-maintained as a historical and natural park. Nearby, you can enjoy natural spots such as the Wisteria Park, allowing you to combine historical exploration with seasonal beauty. It is also a popular way to spend a day when combined with other sightseeing routes in Soja City.
