The Onga Riverbed is a vast riverside park spanning Nakama City and Nogata City in Fukuoka Prefecture. Commonly known as "Nogata Riverside Park," it features well-maintained lawn areas, large playground equipment, and walking paths. Small footbridges connect the two sides of the river-side banks, allowing visitors to cross closely above the water and feel the gentle flow of the river. It is an open, refreshing space where natural beauty meets accessible recreational facilities.
The Onga River played a vital role during the Meiji era. It served as a major logistics hub where riverboats called "Kawahirata" transported coal from the Chikuho coalfields to Wakamatsu Port. At one point, the coal-producing Chikuho region supplied nearly half of the coal used in Japan. Today, the river has transitioned from a busy industrial transport route into a peaceful sanctuary for relaxation and nature observation.
The park is dotted with spots to enjoy the changing colors of nature. In spring, it is a famous spot for cherry blossoms and occasionally tulips. In summer, the riverbed comes alive with approximately 200,000 sunflowers, and in autumn, a 3,200-square-meter area is covered in blooming cosmos flowers planted by local volunteers. The small footbridges crossing the river offer a charming way to experience the riverside scenery up close.
The landscape changes beautifully with each season. Visit in Spring (March–April) for cherry blossoms and tulips, Summer (August) for the massive sunflower fields, and Autumn for the cosmos. The bright daylight hours are ideal for recreation or jogging on the lawns. At dusk, you can enjoy a peaceful view of the river flow alongside the nearby railway scenery, such as the Chikuho Main Line's Ongabashi area.
The expansive lawn areas are perfect for family picnics or children playing on the large playground equipment. The well-maintained paths are also frequently used by locals for walking and jogging. Whether you want to stroll along the river or simply refresh your mind surrounded by seasonal flowers, this park offers a perfect escape into nature.
The surrounding area offers opportunities to connect with local history and culture. Nearby attractions include the Nakama City Historical and Folklore Museum and the Nakama City Community Exchange Center. For those interested in art and coal history, access to Art Space Tani-o, Nogata Saishikan, and the Nogata City Coal Memorial Museum is also available.
As this is a large outdoor area, please dress according to the weather. If you plan to walk or jog, wear comfortable clothing and athletic shoes. While the park is an open space, please be mindful of local etiquette.
