The Onga River Water Source Pump Station is a facility located in Mizuma City, Fukuoka Prefecture, designed to transport water from the Onga River. Today, visitors can learn about its history and structure through the observation area and the information center. While the interior of the facility itself is not accessible to the public, the observation space provides a perfect vantage point to appreciate the exterior and the industrial legacy that once supported the region's development.
This facility was originally constructed to secure industrial water for ironmaking processes. Its primary role was to transport massive volumes of water from the Onga River to nearby steelworks, serving as a vital backbone for the local industry for many years. Currently, the site serves as a piece of living history, featuring exhibits such as vintage photographs and scale models that depict the site during its peak operational years.
The main highlight is the view of the pump station from the dedicated observation area. This space is equipped with informative signage and design benches for a relaxing experience. The adjacent Information Center offers a deeper dive into the past, featuring displays of antique photographs, excavated bricks, cast iron pipes, and physical models. Furthermore, the center features 3D-scanned video footage of the pump station's interior, allowing visitors to visually understand the complex internal structures without entering the building.
The observation area is accessible at any time. On Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays (excluding the New Year holidays), professional tour guides are available to provide detailed explanations. Listening to a guided tour offers a much deeper understanding of the facility's historical significance. Please note that guided tours may be canceled or adjusted due to weather conditions, so it is recommended to check the status in advance.
At the Information Center, you can engage with historical exhibits or shop for local products at the souvenir shop. For those wishing to explore the surrounding area, electric bicycles are available for rent (fee required). The observation area provides a peaceful spot to sit on a bench and observe the historic architecture against the backdrop of the river landscape.
The facility is situated along the banks of the Onga River. The surrounding area is characterized by a blend of natural beauty and sites with significant historical backgrounds. The site is easily accessible via a short walk from the nearest stations, allowing visitors to enjoy the scenic river views during their approach.
