Guide
Oniki-ike is a breathtaking circular crater lake situated at an altitude of 1,241m in Kirishima, Kagoshima Prefecture. Formed by volcanic activity, this lake is surrounded by dense, lush forests, creating a mystical and awe-inspiring landscape. The site offers a sense of profound tranquility and respect for the power of nature. As a natural park, it serves as a precious sanctuary where visitors can escape the hustle and bustle of daily life to reconnect with the raw energy of the earth.
The lake was formed when water filled the crater left behind by the volcanic activity of the Kirishima mountain range. This region is renowned for its dynamic topography shaped by long-standing volcanic processes, and Oniki-ike stands as a living symbol of this natural history. It has been carefully preserved as a natural park, serving as an important landscape resource that showcases the wonders and beauty of volcanic formation.

The primary attraction is the circular crater lake itself, positioned at a high altitude of 1,241m. The striking contrast between the deep green forest and the serene waters is truly spectacular. To allow visitors to enjoy the view without damaging the environment, wooden walkways have been installed around the perimeter. This allows for a comfortable stroll while taking in the full panoramic view of the lake. The crisp, clear air of the high altitude and the seasonal changes in vegetation make every visit a unique experience.
While Oniki-ike is open year-round as a natural park, it offers different charms depending on the season. From spring to summer, the surrounding greenery becomes exceptionally vibrant and full of life. In autumn, the forest is painted with brilliant hues of seasonal foliage. Because the reflection on the lake changes significantly with the weather and the angle of the sun, we recommend visiting during the daytime on clear days when the light is most beautiful and striking.

The main activity here is a "nature walk" to experience the sculptural beauty of the landscape with all five senses. Walking along the well-maintained wooden paths, you can observe the unique volcanic topography up close. It is an ideal place for a mindful experience, breathing in the pure, high-altitude air in complete silence. Since the paths are well-maintained, it is suitable for nature observation and photography rather than intense trekking.
The area surrounding Oniki-ike is part of the grand Kirishima mountain range. Nearby, you can find cultural landmarks such as Kirishima Jingu Shrine and various hot spring (onsen) resorts. A popular travel itinerary involves hiking or driving through this scenic area and then relaxing in a local hot spring. Combining the natural energy of the crater lake with the rich food culture and soothing waters of the Kiroshima area will make your trip truly unforgettable.
Since the lake is located at a high altitude of 1,241m, temperatures are significantly lower than at sea level. Please bring a warm jacket or extra layers regardless of the season. While the paths are maintained, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes or hiking shoes.
