Omuroyama is a stunning scoria cone standing at an altitude of 580 meters, located in Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture. As a designated geosite within the Izu Peninsula UNESCO Global Geopark, it serves as a prominent landmark for the Izu, Ito, and Izu Kogen areas. This site is a designated natural monument, celebrated for its unique, perfectly curved shape formed by ancient volcanic activity. From the summit, visitors are treated to a magnificent 360-degree panoramic view that stretches from the majestic Mount Fuji to the distant Izu Islands. This breathtaking scenery has even won awards for its exceptional landscape beauty and is cherished as one of the 'Eight Views of Ito.'
The formation of Omuroyama as a scoria cone is a testament to the powerful volcanic history of the region. One of its most fascinating cultural traditions is the 'Yamayaki' (mountain burning) ceremony, which has been practiced for over 700 years. Held annually on the second Sunday of February, this ritual involves controlled burning to promote the growth of high-quality cogon grass and prevent excessive tree growth. This traditional practice maintains the mountain's iconic, smooth grassy appearance and unique silhouette. As part of the Eastern Izu Volcanic Group, the site holds immense geological and cultural value.
The most striking feature of Omuroyama is the grand vista unfolding from the summit. A short, scenic 6-minute ride on the mountain lift brings you to the top, where the unobstructed views begin. Once there, you can walk the 'Ohachi-meguri' (crater loop) trail, a circular path of approximately 1 km that allows you to feel the gentle curves of the volcanic terrain. The area also hosts various activities, such as archery near the crater, utilizing the natural topography. Whether it is the seasonal flowers or the changing colors of the landscape, every visit offers a fresh perspective.
Omuroyama reveals a different face with every season. In spring, you can enjoy the blossoms around the base and nearby areas, while summer and autumn offer lush, vibrant greenery. For the best experience, aim for a clear morning; the visibility is often highest then, providing a sharp view of Mount Fuji. Additionally, visiting in February offers the rare opportunity to witness the dramatic and powerful 'Yamayaki' mountain burning ceremony. Your journey begins with a scenic lift ride, offering a bird's-eye view of the surrounding landscape as you ascend. After reaching the summit, the 'Ohachi-meguri' loop walk provides an intimate connection with the geopark's unique topography. At the foot of the mountain, you can explore local food culture by visiting shops that serve delicacies made with fresh Izu ingredients or browsing local specialty shops.
The base of Omuroyama is home to several attractions, including the famous Shabonet (Cactus) Park. The nearby Izu Kogen area is a popular destination for travelers, featuring a wide variety of hotels, traditional inns (ryokan), and restaurants. A common itinerary involves exploring the natural beauty of Omuroyama followed by a stroll through the scenic Izu Kogen highlands.
The summit can be quite windy and feels significantly cooler than the ground level. We highly recommend bringing a windbreaker or a light jacket regardless of the season. While the summit walking paths are well-maintained, comfortable walking shoes are essential for enjoying the terrain.
