Omoiroyama Koheygawa Gorge is a breathtaking valley located in the Omoiroyama Plateau of Yamagata City, Yamagata Prefecture. A well-maintained trekking course of approximately 4.5km follows the flow of the Koheygawa River (a tributary of the Tateya River). The area is highly regarded as a destination for hiking and trekking, thanks to its beautifully preserved natural environment.
The gorge is situated within the watershed of the Koheygawa River, which flows through Yamagata City. This area has been carefully protected for many years as a vital part of the region's natural landscape. The shifting topography and the rhythmic flow of water through the seasons are defining characteristics of this local natural heritage.
The gorge is dotted with various natural landmarks created by the unique terrain. Along the trekking route, you will encounter several beautiful waterfalls, including Chita Falls, Silk Thread Falls (Kinuito no Taki), Nunobiki Falls, Genryu Falls, and Fujibana Falls. Additionally, the course features several named scenic spots such as Iwayagoya, Hakunokutsu, Matsuo-buchi, Seiryu-buchi, Kujira-iwa (Whale Rock), Senzan-buchi, Hotesuna, and Hoshu.
Koheygawa Gorge offers a different face to visitors depending on the season. The best time to visit is from May to November. However, please note that the area is closed from mid-November to mid-April, so plan your visit accordingly. You can witness the fresh greenery of spring, the refreshing cool waters of summer, and the vibrant autumn foliage.
The primary activity here is trekking or hiking along the established trails. As you walk the 4.5km course, you can fully immerse yourself in the surrounding ecosystem. The path provides numerous opportunities to stop and admire the various waterfalls and scenic vistas.
The Omoiroyama Plateau area serves as a hub for outdoor enthusiasts, with nearby attractions such as the Tendo Kogen Ski Resort, various campsites, and the famous Zao Onsen hot spring area.
