Old Misaka Pass (Old Misaka-michi) is a scenic area located in Fujikawaguchiko Town, Yamanashi Prefecture, offering a panoramic view of both Mt. Fuji and Lake Kawaguchiko. A highlight of this route is the "Misaka Tunnel," completed in 1931. Due to its significant historical value, the tunnel was designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 1997. Once a vital transport artery connecting the Kofu Basin, the foot of Mt. Fuji, and the Tokyo area, the route is now a beloved hiking path where visitors can enjoy historical remnants and untouched nature.
Historically, the Misaka Tunnel served as a crucial logistics hub on what was once National Route 8, connecting the Kofu area to the base of Mt. Fuji and onward to Tokyo. After the opening of the "New Misaka Tunnel" in 1972, this old road was bypassed, allowing it to preserve its historical character. The area is also steeped in literary history; famous writers such as Masuji Ibuse and Osamu Dazai are known to have visited this region. You can still find literary monuments around the area, serving as a testament to the cultural heritage of the region.
The centerpiece is the "Misaka Tunnel," which is 394m long and approximately 5.5m wide. The tunnel features a unique structure where the center is slightly elevated for drainage, creating a striking visual effect where the exit is not visible from the entrance. Before reaching the tunnel, you will encounter "Tenka Chaya," a resting spot that offers a spectacular view looking down upon Mt. Fuji and Lake Kawaguchiko. This is a perfect spot to soak in the historical atmosphere alongside the majestic scenery.
While the majestic silhouette of Mt. Fuji can be enjoyed year-round, a clear, sunny day is highly recommended. On bright days, the view from the tunnel exit and the tea house area provides an unobstructed, breathtaking view of the entire mountain and the deep blue of Lake Kawaguchiko. We recommend visiting during daylight hours; the interior of the tunnel is extremely dark, so bright sunlight is essential for a safe and clear experience.
This area is ideal for hiking and trekking. The route through the Misaka Pass offers an immersive experience, combining a physical hike with a journey through time via the historic tunnel. It is also a wonderful way to connect with Japanese literature and history while walking. Taking a break at spots like Tenka Chaya to simply gaze at the view is a luxurious way to experience the tranquility of the mountains.
The area around the pass is dotted with various spots to enjoy Mt. Fuji views. The vicinity of Tenka Chaya is particularly popular for resting due to its excellent vantage point. Additionally, the route serves as a gateway for more serious hikers aiming for the Mitsutoge mountain trails, making it a key landmark for trekkers.
Please wear comfortable walking shoes and active clothing suitable for hiking. The tunnel is dark and the paths can be narrow, so please watch your step. Bringing a lightweight rain jacket is also recommended to prepare for sudden weather changes.

As this is a natural hiking area, English signage and support at local facilities are limited. We recommend researching your route and basic information in advance.
No reservations are required to access the tunnel or the mountain pass, as they are public areas. However, please be mindful of crowds if using nearby facilities.
Photography is free and encouraged to capture the scenery. However, please be considerate of other hikers and ensure you do not block the narrow paths while taking photos.
The tunnel and the mountain pass are not suitable for wheelchairs or those with mobility issues, as the paths involve uneven steps and steep gradients.
The tunnel is very dark and narrow. Please exercise extreme caution when passing large vehicles or cyclists. To protect the natural environment, please ensure you carry all your trash back with you.
